Hardware and game library

PS4 launched in North America and Europe in November 2013 and Japan in February 2014. Slim reduced the design, while Pro added performance capabilities for supported games. A Pro-enhanced game can use those capabilities; a special shell alone cannot change performance.

Choosing the right model

The grey 20th Anniversary console is an original PS4, while the 500 Million edition is a Pro. Compare the underlying model before assessing collectability. Request close-ups of edition markings and the matching controller. A replacement shell or separately purchased controller does not establish an original complete bundle.

Model details and evidence

Choose the performance model before the finish

The limited-edition records below describe packages, whereas original, Slim and Pro describe underlying hardware. Sony’s Spider-Man announcement is a particularly useful example because it offered decorated ordinary PS4 and Pro consoles together. Read the complete model rather than identifying Pro from artwork.

Supporting documentation

Model and package identifiers in manufacturer documentation

A hardware model number is different from a retailer SKU, barcode or serial number. These are the codes explicitly named in the linked manufacturer documents. The region identifies the documentation archive; it does not establish exclusive sale in that country.

Match the full label on the console and its box. A shared family number alone does not authenticate a special-edition shell, identify every bundle accessory or establish current repair eligibility.
