How to play Red Dead Online on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC

In brief: There is no native PS5 or Xbox Series X|S version of Red Dead Online. On PS5 you install the PS4 version and play it through backward compatibility; on Xbox Series X|S you install the Xbox One version. Online play needs PlayStation Plus Essential (or higher) on PlayStation and Xbox Game Pass Essential (or higher) on Xbox. On PC no subscription is needed: buy it on Steam, Epic or the Rockstar Store, sign in with a Rockstar Games account and allow 150 GB of space. Checked 29 October 2026.

What you need on each platform

Microsoft renamed Xbox Game Pass Core to Game Pass Essential in October 2025; Essential is the lowest tier that includes online console multiplayer. Red Dead Online has no cross-play, so PlayStation, Xbox and PC players are in separate worlds.

How to play Red Dead Online on PS5

1. Buy or claim the game. On PlayStation Store you can buy standalone Red Dead Online (Rs 1,669 in India, £19.99 in the UK on 29 October 2026) or Red Dead Redemption 2, which includes Red Dead Online. RDR2 showed as included with PlayStation Plus Extra on 29 October 2026; see how to claim PlayStation Plus games.

2. Download the PS4 version. Open the game from your library and choose Download. Because it is a PS4 game, you can store it on the internal SSD, an M.2 expansion drive or a USB extended storage drive. PS4 games can be played straight from USB storage on PS5.

3. Using a disc instead? Insert the PS4 RDR2 disc into a PS5 with a disc drive and follow the install prompts. The disc must stay in the drive while you play. The PS5 Digital Edition cannot read discs unless you add the separate disc drive. Our PS5 install guide covers both routes.

4. Wait for the update. The game will download a large title update before Red Dead Online is available. If it stalls, try the steps in PS5 download stuck or queued.

5. Check PlayStation Plus. Online play needs PlayStation Plus Essential, Extra or Premium. Without it, the game will stop at the online menu.

6. Start Red Dead Online. From RDR2's main menu choose Online, or launch the standalone app. Accept Rockstar's terms and link your Rockstar Games account when asked; linking makes support requests and account recovery easier.

7. Load or create your character. Your character and progress are stored on Rockstar's servers and tied to your PlayStation Network account, so they appear automatically on PS5 if you played on PS4.

Moving from a PS4 to a PS5? Nothing needs to be copied for Red Dead Online progress, but you can move the installed game to save a download; see transfer games and saves to a new PS5.

How to play Red Dead Online on Xbox Series X|S

1. Buy the game on the Microsoft Store: standalone Red Dead Online was $9.99 (list $19.99) in the US and ₹834.50 (list ₹1,669) in India on 29 October 2026, with the sale ending on 5 November 2026 at 09:59 UTC (15:29 IST).

2. Install the Xbox One version. Go to My games & apps, select Red Dead Online or RDR2 and install it to internal storage or an expansion card. Xbox One games can also run from a USB 3.0 drive.

3. Disc owners on Series X: insert the Xbox One RDR2 discs and install; Series S has no drive and needs the digital version.

4. Check your Game Pass tier. Game Pass Essential, Premium or Ultimate includes online console multiplayer. Without one, you can install the game but not play online.

5. Launch and sign in. Choose Online from the main menu, accept the terms and pick or create a character. Progress from Xbox One carries over automatically through your Xbox account.

How to play Red Dead Online on PC

1. Pick a store. Steam (US $9.99, India ₹849 on 29 October 2026, sale ends 6 November), the Epic Games Store or the Rockstar Store. All three use the Rockstar Games Launcher in the background.

2. Install. Steam lists 150 GB of storage for both minimum and recommended specs. Use an SSD if you can. Need more room? See move Steam games to another drive.

3. Sign in to Rockstar. The first launch opens the Rockstar Games Launcher; sign in or create a Rockstar Games account. Codes bought elsewhere are activated in the launcher; see activate a Rockstar game code.

4. Set graphics. Start with the in-game benchmark and choose a preset that holds a steady frame rate. Steam's recommended GPU is a GeForce GTX 1060 6 GB or Radeon RX 480 4 GB with 12 GB of RAM.

5. Play. No subscription is needed on PC. If the game will not start, follow Steam game won't launch.

On Steam Deck, Valve's compatibility rating is Playable: the default controls are not fully functional in every menu, some text is small, and the on-screen keyboard does not appear automatically. Use Steam's keyboard shortcut (Steam + X) when the game asks for text.

Progress, transfers and cross-play

• Progress is per platform family. PS4 and PS5 share progress through PSN; Xbox One and Series X|S share it through your Xbox account; PC is separate.

• No cross-platform transfer. Rockstar only offered transfers when Google Stadia closed in January 2023. You cannot move a character between PlayStation, Xbox and PC.

• No cross-play. Each platform family has its own servers and posses.

• Standalone and RDR2 share the same character on the same platform and account.

PlayStation Plus and Game Pass prices in India change regularly, so check the official pages before subscribing. There is no Nintendo version.
