Red Dead Online explained: history, which version to buy and prices worldwide

In brief: Red Dead Online is Rockstar Games' online multiplayer Western, set in 1898 in the same world as Red Dead Redemption 2. It launched in beta in November 2018, came to PC in November 2019 and has been sold as a standalone game since 1 December 2020. On 29 October 2026 the standalone version cost $9.99 on Steam US and the Microsoft Store US (list $19.99), and ₹849 on Steam India. What Red Dead Online is

Red Dead Online is the shared-world multiplayer part of Red Dead Redemption 2. You create your own character instead of playing as Arthur Morgan, and you start out freed from prison after being framed for murder. The story is set in 1898, a year before the main RDR2 campaign, and the map is the same: New Hanover, Lemoyne, West Elizabeth, Ambarino and New Austin.

The game mixes several kinds of activity:

• Story and Telegram Missions. A short introductory story, then repeatable missions you pick up from Telegram offices, including the 2025 Strange Tales of the West set.

• Frontier Pursuits (Roles). Bounty Hunter, Trader, Collector, Moonshiner and Naturalist. Each role has its own rank, tools and income loop.

• Free roam events and Showdown Series. Competitive modes from shootouts to races, run as weekly Featured Series.

• Call to Arms and Blood Money. Wave-based defence of a town and the Blood Money crime contracts added in 2021.

• Posses. Ride with up to seven players in a posse; larger sessions and events hold more people.

There are two currencies. Cash (RDO$) buys most clothing, weapons and supplies. Gold bars (made from 100 gold nuggets) buy roles, some horses and premium items. Gold can be earned in play or bought with real money, which is why you will see "in-app purchases" on every store listing.

A short history of Red Dead Online

Red Dead Online did not launch as a finished game. It opened as a beta weeks after Red Dead Redemption 2 and changed shape several times.

The standalone launch on 1 December 2020 is why many people still discover the game separately from RDR2. At launch GameSpot reported a 75% introductory discount, roughly $5, running until 15 February 2021, after which the standalone game was to retail for $20.

In July 2022 Rockstar told players, as reported by Kotaku and The Verge, that Red Dead Online would no longer receive large themed updates because it was moving resources to the next Grand Theft Auto. Rockstar said it would keep running seasonal events, Telegram Missions and smaller improvements. That is exactly what has happened since: monthly bonus events, returning Halloween content, community-designed outfits and the occasional new mission set such as Strange Tales of the West in 2025.

Is Red Dead Online still worth playing in 2026?

Yes, if you understand what you are buying. The world is the same one that made RDR2 famous, sessions are populated on PC and consoles, and the monthly events make it easier to earn than it was in 2019. In October 2026, for example, Rockstar ran 4X RDO$, Gold and XP on Strange Tales of the West Telegram Missions and 3X on All Hallows' Call to Arms, Naturalist Sample Sales and the Featured Series.

What you should not expect is a steady stream of major content. There has been no large expansion since Blood Money in 2021, and the game has no native PS5 or Xbox Series X|S version. Which version should you buy?

A few practical points decide the choice:

• Progress follows your Rockstar account on each platform family, not the product you bought. If you start in standalone Red Dead Online and later buy RDR2 on the same platform and account, your online character remains.

• Steam does not list a separate Story Mode upgrade that we could confirm on 29 October 2026. PC players who want the story should buy RDR2. We mark the Steam upgrade path as unconfirmed.

• Subscription catalogue games can leave. The PS Store US listing showed the PS Plus "Included" offer for RDR2 with an end date of 17 November 2026, 17:00 UTC. If that is your route, check before you rely on it.

Red Dead Online prices worldwide (checked 29 October 2026)

EU prices are from the German stores. The Steam sale ends on 6 November 2026 (Steam does not show a time). The Microsoft Store sale ends on 5 November 2026 at 09:59 UTC, which is 01:59 PST in the US and 09:59 GMT in the UK. The PlayStation Store US page returned $17.99 for the standalone game, but the store marked that price as part of a test, so we list the US PlayStation price as unconfirmed. Always confirm the price at checkout.

India: prices, time zone and what to know

There is no official Nintendo eShop in India, and Red Dead Online is not on Nintendo platforms anyway. Monthly events start on a Tuesday (the October 2026 event began on Tuesday 6 October), so check the Rockstar Newswire that day. If you play on PlayStation in India you still need PlayStation Plus for online play, and Xbox players need Game Pass Essential or higher.
