Hardware and game library
PS2 launched in Japan on 4 March 2000, North America on 26 October and Europe on 24 November. The 2004 Slim reduced its footprint and integrated Ethernet; a later revision reduced the design again. These are hardware changes within one software generation. Colour editions should be distinguished from those changes.
Choosing the right model
Confirm the SCPH label, disc region and power arrangement. Original and Slim models do not share every expansion option. Ask for both a PS2 and a compatible PS1 game demonstration; playing a DVD film alone is not a complete drive test. For collectors, the console, controller and box should match the advertised release.
Model and edition registry
Selected documented models and editions. This registry does not yet include every regional SKU, promotional unit or limited edition.
The launch dates describe the platform, not every SCPH revision or colour. Sony identifies built-in Ethernet as a feature of the Slim redesign. Storage, network accessories and case generation should be recorded separately, since an imported colour does not tell you which connectors are fitted.
Model and package identifiers in manufacturer documentation
A hardware model number is different from a retailer SKU, barcode or serial number. These are the codes explicitly named in the linked manufacturer documents. The region identifies the documentation archive; it does not establish exclusive sale in that country.
Match the full label on the console and its box. A shared family number alone does not authenticate a special-edition shell, identify every bundle accessory or establish current repair eligibility.
GTA editions to check for this hardware
These links match the release-platform labels in our GTA catalogue. Open the game guide for its edition and sources. This is not a complete backwards-compatibility list or a guarantee of current store availability.
Images identify the pictured hardware; they are not evidence for every variant listed. Missing regional SKUs and undocumented editions remain outside this guide. Send a correction with a source.
