Hardware and game library
3DS adds a new software generation and compatibility with many DS games. 2DS plays 3DS software in 2D. New models add controls and processing capabilities; some software specifically requires them. The word New is a hardware designation, not a description of condition.
Choosing the right model
Check the model name, region and required game. Original 2DS is flat while New 2DS XL folds. The smaller New 3DS accepts cover plates; XL does not. Inspect hinges where present, touch input, card reading and account removal. A colourful shell does not prove a limited edition.
Current online-service limits
Nintendo ended new eShop purchases for this platform in March 2023 and most online play in April 2024. Local play and supported offline games are different from online services. Previously purchased downloads and updates remain subject to Nintendo’s service notice. Do not buy a used bundle assuming an old voucher can still be redeemed or an account’s digital games can be transferred to you.
Model and edition registry
Selected documented models and editions. This registry does not yet include every regional SKU, promotional unit or limited edition.
Nintendo’s colour-range page groups several generations and bundles together. A colour listed on that page cannot be applied to every model. Identify the complete model name first, then compare its screen type, extra controls and regional software support with the game you want to play.
Model and package identifiers in manufacturer documentation
A hardware model number is different from a retailer SKU, barcode or serial number. These are the codes explicitly named in the linked manufacturer documents. The region identifies the documentation archive; it does not establish exclusive sale in that country.
Match the full label on the console and its box. A shared family number alone does not authenticate a special-edition shell, identify every bundle accessory or establish current repair eligibility.
GTA editions to check for this hardware
This hardware record does not yet have a verified GTA compatibility entry. Check the GTA release-platform catalogue before buying it for a particular game. Do not assume support through emulation, streaming or backwards compatibility.
Images identify the pictured hardware; they are not evidence for every variant listed. Missing regional SKUs and undocumented editions remain outside this guide. Send a correction with a source.
