Shrek 2 Remastered explained: the 2004 game, what is new and which version to buy

In brief: DreamWorks Shrek 2 Remastered is Aspyr's rebuilt version of the 2004 Shrek 2 console game, the co-op brawler from Luxoflux and Activision. It launches on 10 November 2026 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch and PC (Steam and the Epic Games Store). There is one edition at $29.99, or $26.99 with the 10% pre-order discount (PlayStation Plus needed for the discount on PS5). The remaster adds 4K, online co-op for up to four players, Photo Mode and a Cheats Menu. Prices were checked on every official store on 30 October 2026.

What Shrek 2 Remastered is

It is an enhanced version of the 2004 game, not a new story. The levels and story follow the original console game, which was itself based on DreamWorks Animation's 2004 film. You travel from Shrek's swamp to Fiona's castle and the kingdom of Far Far Away, switching between Shrek, Fiona, Donkey and friends. Each character has abilities you need for fights, bosses and environmental puzzles.

Aspyr's announcement (20 October 2026) lists what is new:

• Rebuilt visuals: better textures, an enhanced UI, remade cutscenes and 4K on PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S and Switch 2 (docked).

• Co-op for up to four players: couch co-op, online, or a mix of both. The 2004 console version supported four players on one screen only.

• Swap heroes at any time on all platforms.

• Photo Mode.

• A new Cheats Menu, where you "unlock cheats" to make a playthrough easier.

What you actually do in the game

Shrek 2 is a light action-adventure made for groups. It has simple combos you can button-mash, short puzzles, and a party of heroes who each do one thing well. In the 2004 original, the main team was Shrek, Princess Fiona, Donkey and Puss in Boots, and other fairy-tale characters joined in some chapters. Aspyr says each hero has unique abilities, and you need them to beat enemies and bosses and to solve environmental puzzles. Aspyr describes it as "pick-up-and-play, button-mashing fun".

The remaster keeps this structure and makes it easier to play together. Hero swapping now works at any moment on every platform, and friends can join online as well as on the sofa. Aspyr also promises hidden Easter eggs across levels "from Shrek's swamp to the castle of Far Far Away". It is rated Everyone, with comic mischief and mild fantasy violence, and is aimed at families as well as adults who played it as children.

The history: Shrek 2 in 2004

Activision released Shrek 2 in North America on 28 April 2004, three weeks before the film reached cinemas. It came out on the PlayStation 2, the original Xbox and the GameCube at a suggested $49.99. The European release followed on 18 June 2004.

Activision's launch press release explains that the console game was developed by Luxoflux, working with the DreamWorks animation team. Players controlled a team of four heroes across 11 levels, switched between them to solve puzzles, and played "Hero Time" missions built around a single character. Up to four players could drop in and out without interrupting the game. The Game Boy Advance version (Vicarious Visions) and the PC version (KnowWonder), each priced at $29.99, were different, single-player-only games. The remaster is based on the console version, which is the co-op game many people remember.

The timing is no accident. DreamWorks Animation's Shrek 5 is due in cinemas on 30 June 2027, and Aspyr's press release promotes the film alongside the game. Aspyr, an Embracer Group studio in Austin, Texas, specialises in remasters and ports, most recently for Switch 2.

Which version to buy

Aspyr confirmed one edition at the same US price everywhere. The table shows list prices, with the pre-order price in brackets, checked on 30 October 2026. USD comes first.

We could not read Nintendo's UK and EU eShop prices from Nintendo's official price service, so they are marked unconfirmed. The Epic Games Store price was not checked. The PlayStation pre-order discount applies only to PlayStation Plus members, so without PS Plus you pay the $29.99 list price.

Our recommendation:

• For couch co-op on a TV: PS5 or Xbox Series X|S give you 4K and the largest screen. They are also the only versions with a confirmed exact unlock time (17:00 UTC).

• For family play on the go: pick the Switch 2 version if you own a Switch 2, because it has 4K docked. Buy the Switch version only for an original Switch. They are separate eShop listings, and we found no official upgrade pack between them.

• On PC: Steam is the cheapest in the UK, EU and India in our check. Steam lists Windows 11 with an i5-10400 or Ryzen 5 3600, 8 GB RAM and a GTX 1060 or RX 570 as the minimum.

• In India: Steam (₹1,599) is far cheaper than PlayStation (Rs 2,999) or Xbox (₹2,249). There is no official Indian Nintendo eShop.

What we know about the Cheats Menu

The Steam page and the press release both confirm a Cheats Menu. Players "unlock cheats" to make a playthrough "seamless". Aspyr has not yet published which cheats are included or how they unlock, so we have not made a cheats page. We will add one after launch once the cheats are verified. Do not trust lists of "Shrek 2 Remastered codes" before 10 November: they are usually copied from the 2004 game and may not apply.

For players in India

• Release time: the PS5 and Xbox versions unlock at 10:30 p.m. IST on Tuesday 10 November 2026 (17:00 UTC). Aspyr has not given an exact time for Steam or Switch, so treat their hour as unconfirmed.

• Prices (30 October 2026): Steam India ₹1,599 (₹1,439 pre-order), PlayStation Store India Rs 2,999 (Rs 2,699 with PS Plus) and Xbox Store India ₹2,249 (₹2,024.10).

• Nintendo: there is no official India eShop, so there is no INR price for the Switch and Switch 2 versions.
