Gears of War: E-Day explained: story, history and which edition to buy

In brief: Gears of War: E-Day is the origin story of the Gears of War series. It is a third-person cover shooter from The Coalition and People Can Fly, published by Xbox Game Studios, and it launched worldwide on 6 October 2026 for Xbox Series X|S and PC. It is included with Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass. To buy it outright, the Standard Edition is $69.99 (₹5,499 in India) and the Premium Edition is $99.99 (₹7,999). No PlayStation version has been announced. Prices were checked on Steam and the Microsoft Store on 30 October 2026.

What Gears of War: E-Day is

E-Day is short for Emergence Day, the moment in Gears of War lore when the Locust Horde first burst out from under the planet Sera and attacked humanity. Earlier games only mentioned that night in flashbacks. E-Day lets you play through it. Xbox Game Studios sets the campaign fourteen years before the original Gears of War (2006). You play as Marcus Fenix alongside Dominic "Dom" Santiago before they became the hardened veterans of the first game.

According to Xbox Wire, the story covers "three harrowing days and nights" in the city of Kalona. Marcus and Dom form Bravo Squad with two new characters, Mags Carter and Lucas Reyes. All four squad members are playable from the start of the campaign.

The game was rebuilt from scratch in Unreal Engine 5. It keeps the series' cover-based combat, Active Reload and the Chainsaw Lancer, but movement is more modern: you can slide out of a sprint, jump gaps and vault obstacles. Levels range from linear set pieces to larger semi-open districts with optional side missions. Xbox says these missions often reward you with weapon mods. Returning enemies such as Drones, Boomers and Wretches appear alongside new creatures, and Emergence Holes are back as a battlefield mechanic.

The history: from Epic's Xbox 360 hit to an origin story

Gears of War started at Epic Games. The first game came out on 7 November 2006 for the Xbox 360 and quickly became one of the console's defining exclusives. Gears of War 2 (2008) and Gears of War 3 (2011) finished Marcus Fenix's war against the Locust. Gears of War: Judgment (2013) was a spin-off prequel starring Damon Baird.

In January 2014 Microsoft bought the series from Epic. The Vancouver studio now called The Coalition took over. It released Gears of War: Ultimate Edition (a 2015 remaster), then Gears of War 4 (October 2016), which followed Marcus's son JD, and Gears 5 (September 2019), which centred on Kait Diaz. In August 2025, Gears of War: Reloaded, an enhanced version of the Ultimate Edition, brought the series to a non-Xbox console for the first time when it launched on PS5 as well as Xbox and PC.

E-Day was revealed at the Xbox Games Showcase on 9 June 2024. People Can Fly, the Polish studio that co-developed Gears of War: Judgment, was confirmed as co-developer in January 2025. Premium Edition owners started playing on 1 October 2026, and the full worldwide launch followed on 6 October.

Why it is trending worldwide

E-Day is the biggest new Xbox release of the autumn, and the charts show it:

• Xbox: it was #1 on TrueAchievements' weekly chart of the most-played Xbox games after launch. In the week of 19–25 October 2026 it was still #4, behind only Minecraft, Fortnite and Call of Duty.

• Steam: it was in Steam's global weekly top sellers (by revenue) for 20–27 October 2026, three weeks after launch, even though it is also on PC Game Pass.

• Store charts: Windows Central reported on 13 October 2026 that it had reached #1 on Xbox stores around the world, including the US and UK, as 2026's second-largest Xbox launch.

Game Pass inclusion matters here. Millions of subscribers could start playing on day one at no extra cost, so player numbers are much higher than sales alone would suggest.

Which edition to buy

There are four ways in. Prices below are official list prices checked on 30 October 2026, USD first.

The Microsoft Store and Steam charge the same in all four regions. The Microsoft Store's Standard and Premium listings are Xbox Play Anywhere, so one purchase covers Xbox Series X|S and the Xbox app on Windows. Your progress follows your Xbox account. The Steam version is a separate PC purchase. Xbox Wire also prices the Premium Upgrade at $30, but we could not confirm the Xbox Store upgrade price in other regions, so treat those as unconfirmed.

Our recommendation:

• You already pay for Game Pass Ultimate or PC Game Pass: play it there. If you want the extra cosmetics, add the $30 Premium Upgrade. The early-access window it was sold on has ended, so today the upgrade only adds items.

• You want to own it and only care about the story: buy Standard. The campaign, split-screen, Horde Siege and Versus are all in the base game.

• You play a lot of Horde Siege or Versus: Premium makes sense if you value the extras. It adds the Emergence Customization Pack, four seasonal customization packs, the Bravo Squad weapon pack and 1,000 Iron, the in-game currency. None of it changes campaign difficulty.

• You only play on PlayStation: wait. Xbox Game Studios has not announced a PS5 version. Gears of War: Reloaded is the only Gears game on PS5.

A physical Collector's Edition was announced. We could not confirm its price on an official store, so it is unconfirmed. Disc owners on Xbox Series X can use Disc to Digital, which Xbox supports for this game, to add a digital licence.

Modes in one minute

• Campaign: solo, 2-player split-screen on console or up to 4 players online. Split-screen is not available on PC.

• Horde Siege: a bigger take on Horde mode. You pick a class (Assault, Marksman, Medic or Breacher), drop in as a 4-player squad and team up with other squads on large maps to take down world bosses.

• Versus: 4v4 PvP with Ranked and Social playlists on new maps.

On Xbox, online play needs a Game Pass tier that includes online multiplayer. Crossplay and cross-platform co-op work between Xbox and PC.

Can your PC run it?

Steam lists a GPU with hardware ray tracing as a requirement, so older cards without ray tracing cannot run it.

You also need 115 GB on an SSD. If you do not have a capable PC, cloud play through Game Pass Ultimate or GeForce NOW is an alternative. Hardware background is on our Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S and Steam Deck pages.

For players in India

• Prices (30 October 2026): Standard is ₹5,499 and Premium ₹7,999 on both Steam India and the Xbox Store India. The Premium Upgrade is ₹2,500 on Steam.

• Launch timing: the worldwide launch was 6 October 2026 at 8:30 p.m. IST. Premium early access began on 1 October at the same time.

• Game Pass is sold in India, and E-Day is included in Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass. Check the current tier prices on xbox.com before you subscribe.

• Downloads: the 134 GB Xbox install is large on slower broadband. Start it overnight in Rest Mode or use the cloud version while it downloads.

Is there a cheats page?

No. The Coalition has not published cheat codes for E-Day, and we will not invent any. Gears games use difficulty settings and unlockables instead. Ignore trainers or "unlock all" tools for an online game: they can get your account banned.
