The Mafia series is 2K's slower, story-first answer to open-world crime games. Each game follows one man through one era of organised crime: Prohibition-era Lost Heaven in the 1930s, post-war Empire Bay in the 1940s and 1950s, and New Bordeaux in 1968. This explainer covers what each Definitive Edition actually changed, how the series developed, which edition to buy in 2026, and what the free PS5 and Xbox Series upgrades mean for you. Prices come from the official US, UK, EU and India stores and were checked on 30 October 2026. The Mafia: Trilogy game page keeps the full price table, PC specs and every linked guide in one place.

What is the Mafia Trilogy?

Mafia: Trilogy is a collection, not a new game. 2K announced it in May 2020 and released the pieces in two waves. Mafia II: Definitive Edition and Mafia III: Definitive Edition arrived on 19 May 2020. Mafia: Definitive Edition followed on 25 September 2020 (24 September in US time zones on Steam), completing the set on PS4, Xbox One and Windows PC.

The three Definitive Editions are very different kinds of update:

Mafia: Definitive Edition is the one that matters most to newcomers. It rebuilds Tommy Angelo's story scene by scene with modern combat and driving, while keeping the 1930s structure of the original. It also has a Free Ride mode where you can explore Lost Heaven outside missions and find side jobs and collectibles. Mafia II DE is the closest to its original: better lighting, textures and character models, plus the DLC episodes Joe's Adventures, Jimmy's Vendetta and The Betrayal of Jimmy. Mafia III DE is the 2016 game with Faster, Baby!, Stones Unturned and Sign of the Times included.

If you only know the series from its GTA comparisons, the key difference is pacing. Mafia games are linear, chapter-based stories set in an open city. You do not run a criminal empire freely the way you would in GTA V. The exception is Mafia III, which uses a district takeover structure. For the wider context of open-world crime games, see our GTA series history.

A short history of the Mafia series

Timeline of the Mafia series from the 2002 original to the 2026 PS5 and Xbox Series updates

2002: Mafia: The City of Lost Heaven. Czech studio Illusion Softworks released the original Mafia on Windows PC in August 2002, with PS2 and Xbox ports in 2004. It became known for period detail, strict police (you could be fined for speeding) and a serious crime story. It is the only Mafia game with real typed cheat codes, and those do not carry into any Definitive Edition. Our Mafia Trilogy cheats guide explains what you can unlock instead.

2010: Mafia II. By then Illusion Softworks had become 2K Czech. Mafia II launched on 24 August 2010 for PS3, Xbox 360 and Windows, moving the story to Empire Bay and war veteran Vito Scaletta. Feral Interactive released a Director's Cut with all DLC in December 2011.

2016: Mafia III. Hangar 13, the new 2K studio formed around much of the 2K Czech team, released Mafia III in October 2016 for PS4, Xbox One and Windows. It follows Vietnam veteran Lincoln Clay through a New Orleans-inspired New Bordeaux. Wikipedia reports it sold seven million copies, despite mixed reviews of its repetitive mission structure and technical problems at launch.

2020: the Definitive Editions. The Trilogy repackaged the series for PS4, Xbox One and PC: a remake, a remaster and a complete edition. Mafia DE was the best received; Steam lists its Metacritic score as 78 on PC.

2025–2026: The Old Country and the current-gen updates. Hangar 13's prequel Mafia: The Old Country, set in 1900s Sicily, launched in August 2025. On 14 August 2026 2K released Mafia: The Omertà Collection, the Man of Honor expansion and native PS5 and Xbox Series X|S versions of Mafia DE. On 8 October 2026 Mafia III DE followed on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Both updates add 60 FPS gameplay and faster loading. 2K's support pages say they are free for existing owners. Across the whole series, Wikipedia puts combined lifetime sales at over 34 million copies.

For most people the answer is Mafia: Trilogy. It is cheaper than buying the three games separately on every store we checked, and on PlayStation and Xbox it now unlocks the PS5 or Series X|S versions of Mafia DE and Mafia III DE at no extra cost.

Two catches. Mafia II DE has no current-gen version: on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S you play the PS4 or Xbox One build. And the Old Country Definitive Edition inside the Omertà Collection is PC, PS5 and Series X|S only, so a PS4 owner cannot play that part. Our PS5 and Xbox Series how-to shows exactly which version to install on each console.

For players in India

  • Best price today: the Xbox Store India sale puts the whole Trilogy at ₹799.80 (list ₹3,999). It ends on 5 November 2026 at 15:29 IST.

  • PlayStation Store India: the Trilogy is Rs 3,999 and Mafia II DE is on sale at Rs 399 until 5 November 2026, 05:29 IST. Mafia DE costs Rs 2,499 and Mafia III DE Rs 1,999.

  • Steam India: the Trilogy bundle is ₹3,357, the Omertà bundle ₹5,598, and Mafia DE alone ₹2,199, which is cheaper than the Rs 2,499 / ₹2,499 console price.

  • The 2026 update times in IST: both current-gen updates went live at 22:30 IST (14 August and 8 October 2026).

  • Indian PSN and Xbox accounts get the same free upgrade rules as everywhere else. A PS4 disc must match your PS5's region for the disc upgrade to appear, so imported discs can be a problem.

The bottom line

Buy Mafia: Trilogy unless you specifically want The Old Country, and buy it on whichever platform you play on. This week the Microsoft Store sale makes Xbox the clear bargain. Start with Mafia: Definitive Edition, which is the best story and the most modern of the three. Then decide whether Mafia II's slower, more cinematic style and Mafia III's open district takeovers suit you. Console players should read our PS5 and Xbox Series how-to before installing anything, because the free upgrade does not move your saves or trophies.
