In brief: Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition is the 2014 remaster of United Front Games' 2012 Hong Kong crime game, with all 24 original DLC packs built in. It is the only version still sold on most stores. On 2 November 2026 it cost $19.99 on Steam, $29.99 on PlayStation Store and Microsoft Store and $2.99 on GOG (85% off until 5 November, 07:59 UTC). In India the cheapest rupee price is ₹729 on Steam. There is no native PS5 or Xbox Series X|S version. The PS4 and Xbox One versions run on the new consoles, and Xbox Series X|S adds FPS Boost. It is not sold in Germany.

Sleeping Dogs is one of the most-requested "GTA-like" games that never got a sequel. You play Wei Shen, an undercover police officer working his way up a Hong Kong Triad. Most people who look it up today want to know three things: which version to buy, whether it runs on their console, and whether anything new is coming. This guide answers all three with official store prices checked on 2 November 2026 (IST). It also covers a detail that store pages hide: which DLC is in the Definitive Edition, and why German buyers cannot get it. The Sleeping Dogs game hub keeps the full price table, PC specs and FAQ.

What Sleeping Dogs is

Sleeping Dogs is a third-person open-world action game set in a compact version of Hong Kong, split into four districts. Square Enix published it, and Vancouver studio United Front Games developed it. The story follows Wei Shen, a Hong Kong-American officer who transfers from the San Francisco police, who goes undercover to bring down the Sun On Yee Triad from the inside.

It is not a GTA clone in the way the label suggests. Three things set it apart:

  • Melee first. Guns are rare. Most fights use a counter-based martial arts system, often compared to the Batman Arkham games, plus "environmental kills" that use the scenery.

  • Two kinds of XP. Triad XP rewards brutal combat and unlocks fighting skills. Police XP rewards keeping civilian damage low and unlocks gun and driving skills. A third meter, Face, comes from side jobs and unlocks clothes, cars and perks.

  • A believable city. The art team took more than 20,000 reference photos in Hong Kong. Background dialogue is in Cantonese, and the radio stations carry licensed music from labels such as Ninja Tune and Warp.

The cast includes Will Yun Lee as Wei Shen, with Tom Wilkinson, Kelly Hu, James Hong, Lucy Liu and Emma Stone. There is no multiplayer, only online leaderboards.

Square Enix's August 2014 announcement said the remaster went "beyond just increasing resolution". The team tuned gameplay, added to the city's ambience and raised audio quality based on fan feedback. For a new player there is no reason to look for the 2012 version. The Definitive Edition costs the same or less and includes everything.

What the 24 DLC packs add

Most of the 24 packs are outfits, vehicles and weapon or XP packs from the original pre-order and season-pass era. Three of them change what you play:

  • Nightmare in North Point (October 2012). A Halloween horror side story with jiangshi (hopping vampires) and the ghost of a gangster called Smiley Cat.

  • The Zodiac Tournament (December 2012). A trip to a private island for a deadly martial arts tournament with its own arenas, bosses and outfits.

  • Year of the Snake (March 2013). Six missions set after the main story. Shen, now a uniformed officer, chases a doomsday cult and gains the ability to arrest civilians.

The Wheels of Fury supercar pack (February 2013) was the last DLC released. In the Definitive Edition every piece is available from the start or unlocks through normal play. You do not need to buy anything else.

How Sleeping Dogs got here: a short history

Timeline of Sleeping Dogs from Black Lotus in 2007 to the film project and sequel talk in 2026

The game's history explains why there has never been a sequel.

  • 2007: Activision cancels a Treyarch project called Black Lotus and hires the new United Front Games to turn the idea into an open-world game.

  • 2009: Activision attaches the game to its True Crime series and reveals it as True Crime: Hong Kong.

  • February 2011: Activision cancels it, citing quality and budget. United Front says the game was playable from start to finish at the time.

  • August 2011: Square Enix buys the publishing rights (not the True Crime name) and renames it Sleeping Dogs.

  • August 2012: Release on PS3, Xbox 360 and PC. It tops the UK charts and sells 1.5 million copies by the end of September 2012, but Square Enix later calls it a commercial disappointment.

  • 2013: A sequel set in China's Pearl River Delta is planned, then scrapped before full production.

  • October 2014: The Definitive Edition launches on PS4, Xbox One and PC. An online spin-off, Triad Wars, is announced the same autumn.

  • January 2016: Triad Wars shuts down after its beta. October 2016: United Front Games closes.

  • 2017–2025: A film starring Donnie Yen is announced in 2017. In January 2025 Yen says it is no longer happening. Simu Liu then takes over the project, and in December 2025 Timo Tjahjanto (Nobody 2) is named director.

  • 2026: On 2 September 2026 VGC reports original designer Alastair Cornish saying a sequel "could happen" but would need "a bit of planetary alignment". On 28 October 2026 Tjahjanto says on X that he and Liu are "taking our time" with the film. As of 2 November 2026 no new Sleeping Dogs game, remaster or film date has been announced.

Which version to buy in 2026

Comparison of the Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition versions on PC, PlayStation, Xbox and Mac with US prices on 2 November 2026
  • Best value: PC via GOG or Steam. GOG's DRM-free copy is $2.99 until 5 November 2026 07:59 UTC (07:59 UTC / 13:29 IST), then $19.99. Steam is $19.99. On PC you can raise resolution and frame rate beyond the console versions, and the game is rated Playable on Steam Deck. Valve notes that the launcher needs the touchscreen or trackpad and some text is small.

  • Best console option: Xbox Series X|S. The Xbox One version gets FPS Boost on Series X|S, which Microsoft lists on the store page. It costs $29.99 and can also be streamed with Xbox Cloud Gaming if you own it and have Game Pass.

  • PS5 owners: buy the PS4 version ($29.99). Sony warns that some PS4 features may be missing on PS5 and that the game may show errors. There is no PS5-native release and no free upgrade to one.

  • Mac: Feral Interactive's port is $19.99 on the Mac App Store and Steam, but it has not been updated since March 2016. Check that it runs on your Mac before you buy it.

Cheats and unlockables

Sleeping Dogs has no cheat codes on any platform, and the Definitive Edition did not add any. Anything sold as a "cheat code" list for this game is either a PC trainer or a mod, and neither is supported by the publisher. Progress unlocks in-game instead:

  • Face level unlocks clothing, vehicles and perks such as valet car delivery.

  • Jade zodiac statues found around the city unlock new martial arts moves when returned to the martial arts club.

  • Health shrines permanently raise maximum health.

  • Outfit sets give bonuses such as extra XP or less police heat when worn together.

Because these are normal progression, we have not made a separate cheats page for Sleeping Dogs. If official codes ever appear, they will go on our cheats hub.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Hunting for the 2012 edition. It is only still sold on Steam Germany. If you already own it, it stays in your library, but new buyers should get the Definitive Edition, which includes everything.

  • Looking for a PS5 version. There is not one. The PS4 version is the one to buy, and it runs on PS5.

  • Buying DLC separately. Everything is already in the Definitive Edition.

  • Expecting multiplayer. There is none. Triad Wars, the online spin-off, closed in 2016.
