In brief: A GTA "edition" can be the first release of a game, a port to another platform, a remaster rebuilt with new visuals and controls, an enhanced version for newer hardware, a bundle such as a Complete Edition, or a paid content upgrade. Instructions for cheats, installs and saves usually apply to one of these, not all of them. Check the exact name in your library or on the title screen before you follow any guide.
Two people can both say "I'm playing San Andreas" and mean different software. One might have the 2004 PS2 game, another the 2013 mobile port and another the 2021 Definitive Edition. They differ in controls, menus, cheat entry and sometimes content. This guide explains each label in plain terms, gives real GTA examples and shows where to find the label on your device.
The edition labels at a glance
Original release — What it means: The game as it first launched on its first platform; GTA example: GTA San Andreas on PS2 (October 2004); Where you'll see it: Disc, case and manual of that platform
Port — What it means: The same game moved to another platform, often with changes; GTA example: San Andreas on PC and Xbox (June 2005); mobile (December 2013); Where you'll see it: Platform name on the store page or box
Classic re-release — What it means: An older version sold again on newer hardware, often emulated; GTA example: GTA III, Vice City and San Andreas as PS2 games on PS4; Where you'll see it: Store listing; delisted in October 2021
Remaster — What it means: A rebuilt version with new visuals and controls; GTA example: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition (November 2021); Where you'll see it: "The Definitive Edition" in the title
Enhanced or expanded version — What it means: A newer-hardware version of the same game; GTA example: GTA V for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S (March 2022); GTA V Enhanced on PC (March 2025); Where you'll see it: Separate library entry or version tag
Complete or bundle edition — What it means: Several releases packaged together; GTA example: GTA IV: The Complete Edition (PC, March 2020); Where you'll see it: The bundle name in your library
Content upgrade — What it means: Paid add-on content for a game you already own; GTA example: GTA VI: Ultimate Edition Upgrade; Where you'll see it: An add-on in the store, not a new game

Original releases and ports
The original release is the reference version that older guides were written for. For the 3D-era games, that usually means PlayStation 2. San Andreas launched on PS2 in October 2004, then on PC and the original Xbox in June 2005.
A port brings a game to another platform. Ports often change more than the controller. War Drum Studios' 2013 mobile San Andreas, for example, uses touch controls. The original Android and iOS ports are separate products from the mobile Definitive Edition. Our San Andreas cheat guide points out that a cheat method shown for one mobile app may not work in another, even when both are called San Andreas.
Handheld GTA games are a separate case. Liberty City Stories and Vice City Stories launched on PSP and were later ported to PS2. Chinatown Wars launched on Nintendo DS in March 2009 and came to PSP that October. Each version has its own differences, and our game hubs list them.
Classic re-releases
Between the original releases and the remaster, Sony's PS2 Classics programmes sold the PS2 versions of GTA III, Vice City and San Andreas on newer PlayStation consoles. Push Square described these as emulated editions that removed some songs because of music licensing. They were removed from sale from the week of 11 October 2021. Rockstar said previous buyers could still download and play them on the platform where they bought them.
On PC, Rockstar removed the original versions too, then reversed that decision. In November 2021 it said the classic PC versions of all three games would return as a bundle on the Rockstar Store. So "original GTA III on PC" is still something you can buy, while "original GTA III on PS4" is only available to people who already own it.
Remasters: The Definitive Edition
Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition remasters GTA III, Vice City and San Andreas. PlayStation's 2021 announcement describes GTA V-inspired controls, updated weapon and radio wheels, waypoints on the mini-map, rebuilt lighting and higher-resolution textures. Grove Street Games adapted it in Unreal Engine. It launched on 11 November 2021 for PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Switch and PC, and on iOS and Android on 14 December 2023.
A remaster is not a sequel and not just a sharper copy of the original. Menus, controls and some systems differ, so cheat inputs and troubleshooting steps often differ as well. That is why our Definitive Edition cheat sheet is separate from the original San Andreas sheet. Mobile availability has also changed over time. GameSpot reported that the GTA III and Vice City Definitive Editions left Netflix Games in December 2024, so check your current app store.
Enhanced versions and platform upgrades
GTA V has the most versions in the series, and three of them are useful examples:
PS5 and Xbox Series X|S versions (March 2022). These are native current-generation versions. Rockstar Support's June 2026 article describes a free upgrade for PS4 owners and for owners of the digital Xbox One version. It says Xbox One disc owners can't upgrade "due to limitations of the platform."
GTA V Enhanced on PC (4 March 2025). Steam lists "Grand Theft Auto V Enhanced" and "Grand Theft Auto V Legacy" as separate products. Rockstar said Enhanced was free for existing PC owners and that Legacy and Enhanced players play online separately. Our Enhanced or Legacy guide explains which one to install.
Backward-compatible play. A PS4 copy running on a PS5 is still the PS4 version. PlayStation says PS4 versions show "PS4" beside the game title in Game Library. That small label tells you which instructions to follow.
Complete editions and bundles
A bundle groups releases together and doesn't change the stories inside. On PC, GTA IV: The Complete Edition replaced GTA IV and Episodes from Liberty City in digital stores from 19 March 2020. Steam says existing save files stay compatible. The update also removed Games for Windows Live, along with services such as multiplayer that depended on it. If a GTA IV PC guide mentions Games for Windows Live, it was written for the older edition. Our Episodes vs Complete Edition article explains what each package contains.
"Upgrade" can mean two different things
The word upgrade is used for two unrelated things. A platform upgrade, such as GTA V PS4 to PS5 or Legacy to Enhanced, gets you a different version of the game. A content upgrade adds items to a game you already own. Rockstar Support describes the GTA VI Ultimate Edition Upgrade that way. It's a digital add-on with extra vehicles, weapons, clothing and in-story businesses, which Standard Edition owners, including boxed-copy owners after redeeming their code, can buy from the PlayStation or Microsoft stores. Buying it doesn't change your GTA VI version, platform or install.
How to identify the exact version you own
Read the full title in your console library, launcher or app store. "The Definitive Edition", "Enhanced", "Legacy" and "Complete Edition" are all part of official product names.
Check the platform label. On PS5, a "PS4" tag beside the title means you're running the PS4 version.
On PC, check the storefront entry, such as Steam, the Rockstar Games Launcher or another store. Separate entries usually mean separate versions.
Check the box or manual for physical copies. The platform banner and edition name are printed on it.
Open the title screen. Remasters show their own logo, and the menu layout usually tells you which generation you're on.
Then use the GTA platform and edition checker and choose instructions written for that version. For installs, see install GTA V on PC, switch between PS4 and PS5 versions and activate a Rockstar game code. For cheats, start at the cheat sheets hub, where original releases and remasters are labelled separately.
How we verified this
We checked release dates and edition names on 27 October 2026 against PlayStation, Steam and Rockstar Support pages. Press reports from GameSpot, Push Square, The Verge and TweakTown covered removals and reversals. We cross-checked original-release dates against several independent records. NextPlayIntel hasn't installed every edition. The differences we describe come from official descriptions and cited reporting, not our own testing. Frequently asked questions
Is the Definitive Edition the same as the original trilogy?
No. It's a remaster with new controls, lighting and textures, built in Unreal Engine. The stories are the same, but menus, inputs and some behaviour differ, so use instructions written for the Definitive Edition.
What is the difference between GTA V Enhanced and Legacy?
They are separate PC versions. Enhanced launched on 4 March 2025 with current-generation features. Legacy is the 2015 PC version. Rockstar says players on each version play GTA Online separately.
Does the GTA VI Ultimate Edition Upgrade change the game version?
No. Rockstar describes it as add-on content you can buy after you own the Standard Edition. You keep the same game on the same platform.
Can I still buy the original PS2-era GTA games?
On PlayStation, the PS2-on-PS4 versions were removed from sale in October 2021. On PC, Rockstar said in November 2021 that the classic versions would return as a bundle on the Rockstar Store. Check the store for current availability.
