Thief: The Dark Project Remastered launches on 3 December 2026 on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2, as well as PS4 and the original Switch. Nightdive Studios, Eidos-Montréal and Atari confirmed the date on 2 November, along with prices: $29.99 for the Standard Digital Edition and $34.99 for the Digital Deluxe Edition. Every version includes a brand-new campaign, The Tarnished Mirror, at no extra cost.

The remaster was first announced at the PC Gaming Show on 7 June 2026 with only a "this winter" window. The 2 November announcement adds the date, the edition line-up, physical pre-orders and the new campaign, which wasn't part of the original reveal.

What's in the remaster

Thief: The Dark Project came out in 1998 from Looking Glass Studios and is widely credited with defining first-person stealth: you play Garrett, a master thief who relies on shadows and silence rather than swordplay, and guards react to what they see and hear. Nightdive has rebuilt it on its in-house KEX Engine. According to the June announcement, the package includes the original game plus the extra missions and updates from the 1999 Thief Gold re-release.

Nightdive says its artists updated textures, models, cutscenes and animations, and the interface gains a weapon and item wheel and a mission selector. The PC version supports custom fan campaigns, and the 2 November release says the remaster works with player-made mods, including the well-known fan expansion The Black Parade.

The Tarnished Mirror: an official campaign from fan modders

The headline addition is The Tarnished Mirror, a self-contained story campaign made by the team behind The Black Parade, one of the most ambitious fan expansions for the original game. Nightdive and Eidos-Montréal are bringing it into official canon, which is unusual for a remaster. It's set between Thief: The Dark Project and Thief II: The Metal Age.

The publishers describe a simple theft that turns into imprisonment and uneasy alliances, then a descent into a drowned necropolis with Lovecraftian horror. It adds new factions, environments and enemies and is built with the remaster's own visuals rather than the 1998 engine. No mission count or play time has been given.

Who's behind it

Nightdive, owned by Atari, specialises in reviving older PC games. Its recent work includes the System Shock remake, Quake II, Star Wars: Dark Forces Remaster and The Thing: Remastered. Eidos-Montréal, the studio behind the 2014 Thief reboot, is partnering with Nightdive and Atari on the release.

Confirmed and not confirmed

Confirmed: the 3 December date, the platforms, the five editions and their US prices, the free Switch 2 upgrade, and The Tarnished Mirror being included at launch, all from the publishers' 2 November release. Steam lists the same date and has pre-purchase open.

Not confirmed: an exact unlock time, file sizes, and frame-rate or resolution targets on each console. The publishers haven't announced a remaster of Thief II either. We'll update this page when the unlock time is posted.
