Rockstar Games says Grand Theft Auto VI pre-loading starts on Tuesday 10 November 2026, nine days before the 19 November launch and two days earlier than the 12 November date it gave before. The pre-load file needs up to 212 GB, depending on your console. PS5 opens at midnight local time and Xbox Series X|S opens for everyone at 00:00 GMT, so the two consoles unlock hours apart in most countries.

The announcement went up on the Rockstar Newswire on 3 November, and Sony published matching advice on PlayStation.Blog. Below is what changed, when your console unlocks and what is still not confirmed.

What Rockstar confirmed

Date and times. Rockstar's wording, as quoted by The Verge and VGC, is that digital pre-loading on PS5 begins on 10 November at midnight local time in your time zone, while on Xbox Series X|S it begins globally on 10 November at 12 a.m. GMT. Pre-loading is for players who have pre-ordered a digital copy.

Boxed copies. Code-in-box versions for both consoles "should be available from retailers beginning November 12". There is no disc in the box, only a download code, so boxed buyers can start pre-loading from 12 November once they redeem it.

File size. The pre-load file "will require up to 212 GB depending on your device". Sony's post is stricter and tells PS5 owners to clear a minimum of 212 GB. That replaces the earlier reported 210 GB figure for the PS5, which Rockstar had not confirmed.

Free map and poster. On 19 November Rockstar will add a printable cover-art poster and a map of Leonida as a free download on the official site. A double-sided physical version follows shortly after launch on the Rockstar Store for $0.99, or free with any Rockstar Store purchase.

When your console unlocks

Because PS5 follows each region's midnight and Xbox follows one global moment, the gap between the two depends on where you live. The table converts Rockstar's wording; it is our conversion, not a Rockstar timetable. Daylight saving has ended in the UK, Europe and the US by 10 November, and has started in Australia and New Zealand.

The pattern is simple. In Asia, Oceania and Europe, PS5 players start first. In the UK both consoles unlock together. In the Americas Xbox players start first, with the download opening on the evening of 9 November, between five and eight hours before PS5 players there. Pure Xbox's regional list matches the Xbox column. For readers in India, that means 00:00 IST on 10 November for PS5 and 05:30 IST for Xbox.

How to be ready

Both platforms use automatic downloads, so the practical steps are the same. According to the Gaming.net's summary of Rockstar's pre-load FAQ, the console needs enough free space, automatic downloads or updates turned on, and to be powered on or in Rest Mode (PS5) or Sleep mode (Xbox) when the file unlocks. We have not been able to open Rockstar's FAQ page ourselves, so check it before relying on those settings.

If your internal drive is short of space, our guide to using USB storage on PS5 explains what an external drive can and cannot do. If a download stalls, the guides for PS5 downloads that get stuck and Xbox Series X downloads that will not start cover the usual fixes.

Confirmed and unconfirmed

Confirmed by Rockstar: 10 November pre-load date, the PS5 and Xbox start rules above, the 212 GB maximum, boxed code availability from 12 November, the 19 November launch and the free poster and map on launch day.

Not confirmed: the exact file size on each console, since Rockstar only gives a maximum; the size of any day-one patch; and whether a pre-load gives you the whole game or leaves a further download on launch day. An older Rockstar Support page on editions still showed 12 November for digital pre-loads in search results on 4 November, so expect it to be corrected. We will update this article if Rockstar adds details.

GTA VI is a PS5 and Xbox Series X|S release; Rockstar has not announced a PC version. Details on the game are on our GTA VI page, and the hardware is covered on our PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X pages.
