Which GTA games can you play on PS5?

In brief: Four GTA releases have native PS5 versions: GTA V, GTA Online, Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition and, from 19 November 2026, GTA VI. A PS5 can also run the PS4 versions of GTA V, GTA Online and the Definitive Edition, plus the PS2-on-PS4 versions of GTA III, Vice City and San Andreas if you already own them. You can't play GTA IV, its episodes, Liberty City Stories, Vice City Stories or Chinatown Wars on PS5.

"Can I play it on PS5?" can mean three different things. The game might have a version built for PS5. A PS4 version might run on the PS5 through backward compatibility. Or the game might not run at all. These differ in practice: a native PS5 version gets the PS5 features its store page lists, while a PS4 version on PS5 behaves like a PS4 game and has the limits PlayStation documents. This guide sorts the series into those three groups and shows you how to check which version is on your console.

Native PS5 versions

GTA V and GTA Online

Rockstar released GTA V and GTA Online for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S on 15 March 2022. The Indian PlayStation page lists PS5 features including faster loading, adaptive triggers, haptic feedback and Tempest 3D audio. The same page sells GTA Online (PS5) on its own. If you only want the online mode, you don't need to buy the story bundle. GTA Online is still an online service, and PlayStation's listing says it "supports up to 30 online players with PS Plus".

If you already own GTA V on PS4, you may not need to buy it again. Rockstar Support's article, last updated 18 June 2026, says owners of the physical or digital PS4 version can download the PS5 version from the PS5 GTA V product page. Disc owners must keep the disc in the console to verify ownership, which means you need a PS5 with a working, compatible disc drive. Our GTA V console upgrade guide walks through the steps and the Xbox differences.

The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition

The Definitive Edition is a remastered collection of GTA III, Vice City and San Andreas. It is not the PS2 games running on new hardware. PlayStation's 2021 announcement describes GTA V-inspired controls, rebuilt lighting and higher-resolution textures, adapted by Grove Street Games in Unreal Engine. The Indian store sells it as a single "PS5 & PS4" product, and PlayStation's 2021 announcement confirms a PS5 version. For more on how the remaster differs from the originals, see the Definitive Edition guide.

GTA VI

GTA VI launches on 19 November 2026 for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. PlayStation India lists it as PS5 Pro Enhanced and states that "the game is not playable on PlayStation 4." Preloading starts at local midnight on 12 November, according to Rockstar Support. At our 27 October check, PlayStation India listed the Standard Edition at ₹5,999 and the Ultimate Edition at ₹7,499. The GTA VI hub tracks prices, editions and what is still unconfirmed.

PS4 versions that run on PS5

PlayStation says the PS5 is backward compatible with "the overwhelming majority" of PS4 games. It also warns that some PS4 features may be missing and that some games may show errors on PS5. For GTA, Rockstar's November 2020 backward-compatibility announcement covered the PS4 versions of GTA V and GTA Online. It also covered the Rockstar PS2 titles then sold on PS4, including GTA III, Vice City and San Andreas.

The catch with those three PS2-on-PS4 versions is that you can't buy them any more. Rockstar removed earlier versions and bundles from digital stores from the week of 11 October 2021, before the Definitive Edition launched. It said previous buyers would "still be able to download and play them on their respective purchase platforms." Look in your PS5 Game Library under "Your Collection". If they aren't there, the PS Store won't sell them to you.

Two practical points apply to every PS4 version on PS5:

• Discs need a drive. PlayStation states that PS4 discs can't be used with the PS5 Digital Edition, and you must keep the disc inserted to play. Our PS5 console page explains which models can take Sony's detachable drive.

• Storage rules differ. PlayStation says PS4 games can be played straight from USB extended storage, but PS5 games must be copied back to console storage before you can play them. See what PS5 USB storage can and can't run.

How to check which version you have installed

If you own both the PS4 and PS5 versions of a game, it's easy to start the wrong one. PlayStation's support page describes the check:

1. Go to Game Library from the Games home screen.

2. Highlight the game, press X, then select [...] to see the version options.

3. Read the title at the top of the screen. PlayStation says PS4 versions display "PS4" beside the game title, while PS5 versions show only the title.

This matters beyond graphics. GTA Online progress moved from PS4 to PS5 stays on PS4 too, and Rockstar Support says progress made on different console generations "will not be synced after migration." If you play on the wrong generation, you'll be adding progress to the wrong profile.

GTA games you can't play on PS5

GTA IV and Episodes from Liberty City. On PlayStation, GTA IV and its two episodes only came out on PS3. PlayStation states that "PS5 consoles do not support PlayStation 3 discs," and the games were never released on PS4. On current hardware, Rockstar's 2020 announcement lists GTA IV and Episodes from Liberty City as backward compatible on Xbox Series X|S. On PC, they are sold as GTA IV: The Complete Edition. Treat any website offering a "GTA IV PS5 download" with suspicion, because it isn't a Rockstar release.

Liberty City Stories and Vice City Stories. Both started on PSP and later came to PS2 and, as PS2 Classics, to PS3. Push Square reported in 2020 that neither reached PS4, even though ratings listings once suggested they might. No PS4 version means nothing for a PS5 to run. Our Liberty City Stories and Vice City Stories hubs list the platforms where they did launch.

Chinatown Wars, the early overhead games and GTA Advance. These came out on DS, PSP, mobile, the original PlayStation, PC, Dreamcast and Game Boy hardware. We found no PS4 or PS5 version of any of them. PlayStation's compatibility pages cover PS4 discs, not PS1 or PS2 discs.

Which version should you choose on PS5?

Our recommendation is based on published features and availability, not on our own testing:

• Buying GTA V today: choose the PS5 version, or claim the free upgrade if you own the PS4 version. The PS4 version only makes sense if you need to play alongside someone still on PS4.

• Wanting the 3D-era classics: the Definitive Edition is the only version you can still buy on PS5. If you already own the PS2-on-PS4 versions, you can keep playing them. They are a different edition with different cheat inputs and features, so follow guides that name the version you have.

• Waiting for GTA VI: check your free storage and account region before launch. File sizes had not been published on the official listings we checked.

The GTA platform and edition checker shows the published status of any game and device pair. Results that aren't confirmed are marked as unverified.

How we verified this

We checked each game's PS5 status on 27 October 2026 against PlayStation's Indian store pages and support articles, Rockstar Support and Rockstar's 2020 backward-compatibility announcement. We used reputable press reports for removals and releases that didn't happen. Prices come from PlayStation India on that date. NextPlayIntel has not tested these games on PS5 hardware. Where official sources say nothing, we say we couldn't find a release instead of guessing. This article was drafted with AI assistance and fact-checked against the sources below.
