Sony Pictures has acquired the feature film rights to Mouthwashing, the 2024 psychological horror game from Swedish developer Wrong Organ and publisher Critical Reflex. Deadline reported the deal on 29 October 2026 at 1:05 pm PT (20:05 UTC, 4:05 pm ET), and The Hollywood Reporter confirmed it.
Karyn Kusama (Yellowjackets, Jennifer's Body, The Invitation) is attached to direct. Her regular collaborators Matt Manfredi and Phil Hay are writing the script, and Scott Derrickson, C. Robert Cargill and Vince Cheng produce through Crooked Highway, their company with a deal at Sony's Screen Gems label.

What the game is about
Mouthwashing follows five crew members stranded on the space freighter Tulpar after a crash, as supplies run low and paranoia sets in. It's a short, first-person game told out of order, jumping between before and after the disaster, and it deals with responsibility, denial and abuse of power. Deadline says the film's plot is being kept under wraps, so it isn't known how closely it will follow the game.

Why Sony picked it up
Mouthwashing launched on PC on 26 September 2024 and became one of the most talked-about indie horror games of that year. According to Deadline, it scored 88 on Metacritic, sold close to 1 million units, and won Best Narrative and Players' Choice at the Horror Game Awards. Videos about it have pulled 63 million views on YouTube and close to 1 billion on TikTok, the kind of built-in audience studios look for in adaptations.
Kusama is a strong fit for the material. Destroyer, The Invitation and Yellowjackets all centre on guilt, group tension and slowly revealed truths, which are core to the game.
