In brief: FINAL FANTASY RESONANCE is Square Enix’s first HD-2D Final Fantasy, a turn-based RPG released on 22 October 2026 for PS5, Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X|S and PC (Steam and Xbox on PC). The Standard Edition costs $49.99 on every official US store and the Digital Deluxe Edition costs $59.99. In India it is ₹3,499 (Standard) or ₹3,999 (Digital Deluxe) on Steam, PlayStation Store and Xbox. A free demo carries its save over to the full game on all platforms, so try that first.
What FINAL FANTASY RESONANCE is
FINAL FANTASY RESONANCE is a single-player, turn-based role-playing game published by Square Enix and co-developed by Square Enix and LANCARSE Ltd. (both are listed as developers on Steam). Square Enix calls it “the first HD-2D game in the FINAL FANTASY series”. HD-2D is the visual style Square Enix used for Octopath Traveler and the Dragon Quest III remake: pixel-art characters and sprites placed in 3D scenery with modern lighting, depth of field and particle effects.
It is not an all-new numbered entry. According to Square Enix’s launch press release, the game is “based on the first story arc of the mobile game FINAL FANTASY Brave Exvius”, but it has been “refined and extensively rebuilt as a full-fledged console-quality RPG experience”. You play Rain, a knight of the Kingdom of Grandshelt who commands an airship squadron at a young age, alongside his childhood friend Laswell. Chocobos, espers, airships and Crystals all return.
The game was revealed in the Nintendo Direct of 9 June 2026 and launched worldwide on 22 October 2026. In its first full week it was one of the best-selling games on Steam: SteamDB’s global weekly top-sellers list for the week to 27 October 2026 placed it at #8, and Steam’s own United States weekly chart placed it at #2. That is why we added it to the Trending section of the NextPlayIntel game catalogue.

A short history: from Brave Exvius to HD-2D
FINAL FANTASY Brave Exvius was a free-to-play mobile RPG. Square Enix and Gumi released it in Japan in 2015 and worldwide in 2016. It became known for summoning “units”, many of them guest characters from older Final Fantasy games. Its story followed Rain and his friend Lasswell (spelled Laswell in RESONANCE) on a quest to protect the Crystals.
RESONANCE takes that first story arc and rebuilds it as a paid console and PC game with no gacha summoning. The “unit” idea survives as Visions: echoes of famous characters such as Cloud, Tidus and the Warrior of Light who fight beside your party with their own skills. The title comes from the battle system’s headline feature, Resonance attacks, which are cinematic special moves powered by those Visions.
The HD-2D look connects RESONANCE to Square Enix’s recent pixel-art revivals. If you enjoyed the Octopath Traveler games, Triangle Strategy, Live A Live or the HD-2D Dragon Quest remakes, you will recognise the style. If you only know the 3D Final Fantasy games, think of the presentation as a modern take on the Super Nintendo era of Final Fantasy IV to VI.
How it plays
Turn-based battles with a twist. Exploiting an enemy’s weakness staggers it, breaks its defences and can earn your party extra turns.
Visions. You equip Visions of past Final Fantasy heroes to customise your party, then unleash their Resonance attacks.
Side content. Square Enix lists optional bosses, a Colosseum, the Chamber of Arms (foes sealed inside legendary weapons) and a fight with Ultima Weapon.
Accessibility. The Steam listing shows adjustable difficulty, a keyboard-only option, full controller support, play-at-your-own-pace and “playable without timed input” tags.
Audio and text. Steam lists full audio in English and Japanese, with text in English, French, German, Spanish (Spain), Simplified and Traditional Chinese, Japanese and Korean.
The ESRB rating on Nintendo’s US store is Everyone 10+. Steam lists 40 achievements, Steam Cloud saves and Family Sharing.

Platforms and file sizes
Platform | Store | Size / requirement | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
PlayStation 5 | PlayStation Store | Not listed by the store at our check (unconfirmed) | PS5 version only; no PS4 version is listed. Physical edition exists. |
Nintendo Switch 2 | Nintendo eShop | 8.8 GB | Separate product from the Switch version. Physical edition exists. |
Nintendo Switch | Nintendo eShop | 8.6 GB | Physical edition exists. |
Xbox Series X|S and Xbox on PC | Xbox / Microsoft Store | Not listed at our check (unconfirmed) | Digital. |
PC | Steam (app 3259780) | 15 GB, Windows 11, DirectX 12 | Minimum: Ryzen 3 2300X or Core i3-8100, 8 GB RAM, GTX 1650 / RX 6400 / Arc A580 for 1080p at 30 fps on Low. |
Steam’s recommended spec is a Ryzen 5 2500X or Core i3-8100, 8 GB RAM and an RX 5500 XT, Arc A580 or GTX 1650, targeting 1080p at 60 fps on the Highest preset. That is a light requirement by 2026 standards, so most gaming laptops from the last five years should run it.
Which edition to buy
Square Enix sells three editions. The June 2026 reveal release gives the US suggested prices:
Edition | US price | What you get | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|---|
Standard | $49.99 | The base game | Most players |
Digital Deluxe | $59.99 | Base game plus “useful in-game items” | Players who want the bonus items and are sure they will finish the game |
Collector’s Edition | $209.99 | Base game, Digital Deluxe bonuses, and four physical items, including an artbook, the soundtrack and a FINAL FANTASY TRADING CARD GAME promo card | Collectors. Stock at the Square Enix Store was not checked (unconfirmed). |
Our recommendation: play the free demo, then buy the Standard Edition unless you specifically want the Deluxe items. The Deluxe bonuses are in-game items, not extra story chapters. If you might want them later, buy Deluxe up front: on Xbox and Steam US the separate Digital Deluxe Upgrade costs $14.99, so Standard plus the upgrade comes to $64.98 instead of $59.99.
Which platform? On PC, Steam UK is the cheapest UK option at £39.99, against £49.99 on PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo. In India, Steam, PlayStation Store and Xbox all charge ₹3,499, so choose the platform you already use. On Nintendo, the Switch and Switch 2 versions are separate products at the same US price. Buy the Switch 2 version if you own a Switch 2. Whether Nintendo offers a Switch-to-Switch 2 upgrade path is unconfirmed.

Try the free demo first
Square Enix says the free demo is available on all platforms and that “save data carr[ies] over on all platforms”. On Steam the demo is a separate free download (app 4474710). On PlayStation Store it appears as a free item on the game’s page. On Nintendo eShop there are separate demos for Switch and Switch 2. Play it on the same account and system where you plan to buy the full game. Our PS5, Switch 2 and Xbox how-to walks through the install and save carry-over step by step.
For players in India
Indian Steam, PlayStation Store and Xbox accounts pay in rupees. The Standard Edition is ₹3,499 and the Digital Deluxe Edition is ₹3,999 on all three stores. The Xbox Digital Deluxe Upgrade is ₹1,249. Nintendo has no official eShop in India, so there is no official INR price for the Switch versions. Players who import physical Switch or Switch 2 copies should buy from reputable retailers and check the cartridge region and language. The game launched on 22 October 2026. Because of the time difference, some Asian store pages, including Square Enix Asia’s, list 23 October.
Hardware explainers: PS5 · Switch 2 · Switch · Xbox Series X · Xbox Series S.
Are there cheats?
No verified cheat codes exist for FINAL FANTASY RESONANCE, so we do not publish a /cheats/ page and will not invent codes. The Digital Deluxe items and the adjustable difficulty setting are the official ways to make the game easier. Avoid “trainers” that ask you to disable antivirus software.
