FromSoftware has taken the game servers for Dark Souls II and Dark Souls III offline on every platform after finding a problem with them, and has not said when they will come back. The studio's FROMSOFTWARE PLAYER SUPPORT account posted the notice in Japanese at 07:01 UTC on Friday 30 October (3:01 am ET) and in English at 08:45 UTC (4:45 am ET).

The English post reads: "Due to a server issue, the game servers for the following titles will be temporarily unavailable on all platforms. We will provide updates once we have information regarding the server restoration time." It lists only DARK SOULS II and DARK SOULS III. When we checked the account before publishing, no newer post about the servers had appeared.

Infographic timeline: Dark Souls II maintenance was announced on 27 October and ran from 05:00 to 07:00 UTC on 28 October, both games' servers were stopped on 30 October at 07:01 UTC, and no restoration time has been given

What stops working

In both games, the multiplayer layer runs through FromSoftware's servers: summon signs for co-op, invasions and other PvP, player messages on the ground, bloodstains and the ghosts of other players. With the servers stopped, those features are gone for everyone, on PC and consoles alike. The notice says nothing about single-player access, though both games have always been playable without a connection.

If your game shows a network error right now, there is nothing to fix on your end. The fault is on FromSoftware's side, so resetting your router or reinstalling won't help. If other online games also fail, that points to a local problem, and our PS5 troubleshooting guide and Xbox Series X|S troubleshooting guide cover the usual connection checks. PC players can use our Steam game won't launch guide for launch problems that aren't server related.

Why players are worried

The series has been here before. On 23 January 2022 the PvP servers for the PC versions of Dark Souls III, Dark Souls II and Dark Souls: Remastered were switched off so the team could investigate reports of an issue with online services. Getting them back took most of the year: Dark Souls III on PC returned on 25 August 2022, Dark Souls II: Scholar of the First Sin on 25 October and Dark Souls: Remastered on 9 November. The 2012 PC release, Prepare to Die Edition, never got its online services back.

This shutdown is broader. The 2022 outage hit PC only, while this one covers every platform. It also comes two days after scheduled Dark Souls II maintenance, which FromSoftware said finished at 07:00 UTC on 28 October. Some outlets have pointed to recent PHP security issues elsewhere in the industry. FromSoftware has not linked the outage to the maintenance or to any security problem, so treat those theories as speculation.

Confirmed and unconfirmed

  • Confirmed: Dark Souls II and Dark Souls III game servers are stopped on all platforms because of a server issue, and FromSoftware will post a restoration time when it has one.

  • Not confirmed: the cause, how long the outage will last, and whether it has anything to do with security. Dark Souls: Remastered and Elden Ring are not named in the notice.

Anyone thinking of buying either game for co-op or PvP should wait for the servers to return. In the same week FromSoftware also delayed The Duskbloods to 2027. For hardware news, see our PlayStation 5 page.

In India, the Japanese notice went up at 12:31 pm IST and the English one at 2:15 pm IST on 30 October. Steam lists Dark Souls III at ₹4,299 and Dark Souls II: Scholar of the First Sin at ₹2,399.
