This explainer covers what the game is, where it came from, why it is trending now, and which version to buy. If you already own it, go to our PS5 how-to or the Crimson Desert troubleshooting guide. Store links, prices in four currencies and PC requirements are on the Crimson Desert game page.

What Crimson Desert is

Crimson Desert is a third-person open-world action-adventure set on the continent of Pywel. You play mainly as Kliff, a mercenary of the Greymanes. After a night ambush by the rival Black Bears kills or scatters his comrades, Kliff sets out to find the survivors and rebuild the faction. Along the way two more playable characters, Oongka and Damiane, join the story. Each has their own weapons, skills and combat style, and once they are unlocked you can explore and take on side quests with any of them.

The combat mixes weapon skills with bare-handed strikes, kicks and grapples, so you can chain a sword combo into a throw. Swords, spears, greatswords, axes, dual wields and ranged weapons are all in. You travel on horses and, later, more unusual mounts including a dragon and mechs. You can climb cliffs and walls, then glide down. There is also a sky realm called the Abyss, which the story ties to an imbalance threatening the world.

It is single-player only. There is no co-op and no online mode, which is one of the biggest differences from Pearl Abyss's MMO Black Desert.

Pearl Abyss is a South Korean studio best known for Black Desert (2014). Crimson Desert started life as a Black Desert prequel with online features. During development it became a fully single-player story game, and it no longer shares a setting with Black Desert in any way you need to know about to enjoy it. It took around seven years to build.

At launch it sold 2 million copies in its first 24 hours and reached 5 million by 15 April 2026, with a Steam peak of 276,261 concurrent players (Pearl Abyss). Critics were positive but not unanimous: Metacritic lists 77 on PC and PS5, and OpenCritic shows 74% of critics recommending it.

There were two launch controversies worth knowing about. First, Intel Arc graphics cards were not supported at launch; a later patch let them run, but not in an optimised state. Second, Pearl Abyss apologised after players found AI-generated art in the game.

What "Enhanced" means

You will now see the game sold as Crimson Desert Enhanced. This is not a separate product you must buy again. Version 2.00.00, released on 25 August 2026, was a free update for everyone who owned the game. It added new cutscenes and story moments, voice-over in French, German, Spanish, Japanese and Brazilian Portuguese, Arabic text, and many smaller additions such as mounts, pets and quality-of-life changes.

If you bought the original in March, you already have Enhanced. Just update the game.

Why it is trending now

On 31 October 2026, Crimson Desert Enhanced was #9 on Steam's global top sellers, and the Charting the Unknown DLC was #13. About 26,800 people were playing it on Steam at 4 p.m. IST that day, according to Steam's own player count. On consoles, a free 5-hour trial (PS Plus Premium and Deluxe on PlayStation; all players on Xbox) is bringing in new players.

The expansion launched worldwide on 29 October 2026 at 22:00 UTC (3 p.m. PT, 6 p.m. ET). It adds the ocean around Pywel, with diving and underwater areas, ships you can build and sail, romance and marriage, castles you can claim, upgraded housing, businesses and a boss-rush mode called the Garden of Trials. Unlock times, the full feature list and what you need to unlock each part are in our NPI News report: Crimson Desert: Charting the Unknown release time and price.

Our advice:

  • New and unsure? Play the free 5-hour trial on PS5 or Xbox first. Your save carries over if you buy.

  • Most players: buy Standard. Deluxe adds only cosmetic armour, a shield and horse gear. On PS5, Standard also includes the Grotevant Plate Set, which is exclusive to PlayStation.

  • Add the DLC later. Most of Charting the Unknown is locked behind story progress: the ocean storyline opens after the main quest "Howling Hill", and the castles, character stories and Garden of Trials open after the main story. You lose nothing by waiting.

  • PC players: check the system requirements first. You need an SSD and about 180 GB of space for the base game, plus about 50 GB for the DLC.

Platforms and how they differ

  • PS5: digital and physical. The PS5 Standard edition includes the Grotevant Plate Set. See our PS5 how-to and the PS5 hardware page.

  • Xbox Series X|S: digital and physical. It is Xbox Play Anywhere, so one Microsoft Store purchase covers Xbox and Windows. Game Pass Ultimate members can stream it from the cloud, but it is not included in Game Pass: you still have to buy it. See the Xbox Series X page.

  • PC: Steam and the Epic Games Store. It uses Denuvo, which limits activations to five PCs per day.

  • Mac: Steam and the Mac App Store, on Apple silicon (M2 Pro or better) with macOS 15 or later.

  • Switch 2: a version planned for the first half of 2027 has been reported, but Pearl Abyss has not given a date or price, so treat it as unconfirmed.

For players in India

  • Prices (31 October 2026): Standard ₹4,499 and Deluxe ₹5,129 on Steam India and the Xbox Store India, Rs 4,499 and Rs 5,129 on PlayStation Store India. The DLC is ₹1,599 / Rs 1,599.

  • DLC release time: Charting the Unknown unlocked at 3:30 a.m. IST on Friday 30 October 2026.

  • Download size: about 180 GB on PC. On a 50–100 Mbps connection that is many hours, so start it overnight.

  • Free trial: Pearl Abyss lists the trial for PS Plus Premium and Deluxe members and all Xbox players without regional exclusions. PS Plus tiers and prices differ in India, so check your plan before you count on it.

Cheats

Pearl Abyss has not released any cheat codes for Crimson Desert, so NextPlayIntel does not publish a cheat sheet for it. Avoid "trainer" downloads: on PC they can trigger Denuvo checks or carry malware, and nothing in the game requires them.

Is it worth buying in late 2026?

If you like large single-player worlds with physical, combo-driven combat, yes, and the Enhanced update plus seven months of patches make it a better game than at launch. If you are on the fence, the trial costs nothing. If you mostly want the ocean and ships, remember that they arrive mid-story, so you need the base game and some hours in it first.
