Hardware and game library

Saturn uses CD software and a regional game library. Its hardware differs fundamentally from Mega Drive and Dreamcast, so names from Sega’s catalogue should not be treated as one shared compatible platform. Some games use specific RAM expansion cartridges.

Choosing the right model

Identify the regional model, controller and required expansion for the game. Test disc reading and saved-data retention. A cartridge advertised as extra RAM is not automatically a substitute for every other cartridge function. Inspect the console’s actual label and input voltage before importing.

Sega’s history identifies the dual-processor design and the separately branded licensed systems. A different manufacturer badge is more than a colour change. This page’s photograph is a standard Saturn; it is not evidence for the appearance or package contents of a V-Saturn or Hi-Saturn.
