Hardware and game library
Game Gear offered colour portable gaming in a horizontal enclosure. Its cartridges are a distinct format; a Game Boy game does not become compatible because both are handhelds. Accessories and adapter-based compatibility should be evaluated individually.
Choosing the right model
Check screen visibility, sound and power behaviour. Repair history matters on ageing handhelds: ask whether components, screen or shell have been replaced. A refurbished unit may be attractive for play, while collectors may prioritise original parts and documented provenance.
Model and edition registry
Selected documented models and editions. This registry does not yet include every regional SKU, promotional unit or limited edition.
Sega describes a separately sold TV tuner and optional external power accessories. The tuner’s original broadcast capability is historical, so its inclusion is not a promise of working modern television reception. Do not confuse this original cartridge handheld with later miniature preloaded products.
This hardware record does not yet have a verified GTA compatibility entry. Check the GTA release-platform catalogue before buying it for a particular game. Do not assume support through emulation, streaming or backwards compatibility.
Images identify the pictured hardware; they are not evidence for every variant listed. Missing regional SKUs and undocumented editions remain outside this guide. Send a correction with a source.
