Hardware and game library
Dreamcast launched in Japan on 27 November 1998. Sega paired GD-ROM games with a modem and the VMU visual memory-card concept. Its historical network features were ambitious, but the original service ecosystem should not be assumed to remain available.
Choosing the right model
Check drive operation, controller ports and VMU condition. Video modes vary by game and cable, so confirm support before buying a VGA-based setup. An optical-drive emulator is a modification and should be described separately from original hardware. The console’s regional power requirement also matters.
Model and edition registry
Selected documented models and editions. This registry does not yet include every regional SKU, promotional unit or limited edition.
The cited Japanese table lists a removable 33.6Kbps modem. Modem specifications should remain tied to region and revision rather than applied worldwide. The VMU is a memory peripheral with a display, not a standalone replacement for the Dreamcast. Historical network features do not establish current service availability.
