Rockstar Games' UK staff will vote on whether to recognise a trade union from 12 to 26 November 2026, and that window sits right on top of GTA VI's busiest fortnight. The ballot opens the same day digital preloading begins and closes a week after the game launches on 19 November. The Independent Workers' Union of Great Britain (IWGB) announced the vote on 27 October. If staff vote yes, it says the IWGB Rockstar Game Workers Union will become the biggest recognised union in the UK games sector.

For players, the short answer is that nothing about the vote changes when or how you get GTA VI. It's a ballot on union recognition, not a strike, and Rockstar's release date hasn't moved. It is still one of the biggest labour stories the games industry has seen, and it involves the studio behind the most anticipated game of the year. Here's what's confirmed, what isn't, and how the dates line up.

What was announced

The IWGB announced the vote in a press release sent to several outlets, including The Verge, Kotaku and Game Developer. PC Gamer and GamesRadar+ also covered it. All of them give the same dates: voting opens on 12 November and closes on 26 November 2026.

The vote is on a recognition agreement that, according to Kotaku, union members and Rockstar management have been negotiating since July. Recognition means the employer formally accepts the union as the body that bargains for staff on agreed topics. Workers had earlier asked Rockstar to recognise the union voluntarily before GTA VI came out, Kotaku reports, but the matter is now going to a staff vote instead.

The union's own account, Rockstar Game Workers Union on Bluesky, posted: "From pay and pensions to parental leave and overtime, this recognition agreement is a chance for workers to be involved in the decisions that shape their lives."

What the recognition deal would cover

According to the IWGB press release quoted by PC Gamer, the agreement would "give workers a say over topics including pay and bonuses, overtime, redundancies, flexible working arrangements, and generative AI policies." The union's Bluesky post adds pensions and parental leave.

Union committee member Shanti Easton-Steel explained why staff want a formal voice. "When management choices are kept hidden, we can't properly address issues like the gender pay gap, the uneven and ever-changing policies on overtime pay, or the concerns many co-workers hold around job security post-release," she said in the statement reported by Game Developer. She also pointed to the timing: "This November, we have the chance to make gaming history not once but twice."

IWGB president Alex Marshall said the vote is "just as historic as the game release" for the wider industry, but for Rockstar workers "it is fundamentally a choice about whether you get to have a say in how your day-to-day life is organised," as quoted by PC Gamer.

Background: the 2025 firings and the tribunal

The vote follows a bitter dispute. In October 2025 Rockstar fired 31 employees who were involved in the union drive. The IWGB called it "the most brazen act of union busting the games industry has ever seen," according to PC Gamer. Rockstar has said the staff were dismissed "for gross misconduct, and for no other reason," and later said they had discussed confidential information in an external channel, Kotaku reports. PC Gamer says Rockstar alleged the staff leaked GTA 6 information in a public Discord. Kotaku adds that the hearing has heard claims of a "mole" in the union Discord server who allegedly passed information to Rockstar.

That case is now in front of an employment tribunal in Scotland, and closing submissions are expected on 17 and 18 November, the two days before GTA VI's launch. Game Developer notes that the recognition vote is separate from the tribunal. The vote's result won't settle the case, and the tribunal's decision won't automatically decide the vote.

What Rockstar has said

Rockstar hasn't publicly commented on the vote, PC Gamer reports. The closest thing to a position is a line from head of publishing Jennifer Kolbe in Bloomberg's recent feature on the making of GTA VI: "We go where the team goes. So if they want a union, they will have a union." Game Developer reports the same quote. That suggests Rockstar won't fight recognition, though the company hasn't made a formal statement.

In India

If you've pre-ordered GTA VI in India, your plans stay the same. Here's why:

  • It's a recognition ballot, not a strike. No industrial action has been announced. A yes vote gives staff a formal say on things like pay and overtime. It doesn't stop work.

  • The release date is unchanged. Rockstar's Newswire still lists 19 November 2026 for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Our GTA VI release time guide explains what that means in IST.

  • Preload still starts on 12 November. Plan your storage now with our GTA VI file size and storage guide. The official install size still hasn't been published.

  • Rockstar India isn't mentioned. Rockstar has a studio in Bengaluru, but every report describes this as a vote for UK staff. We've found nothing saying Indian staff are part of it.

The longer-term effect is harder to call. After launch, studios often move into patches, GTA Online-style updates and the next project. The union says job security after release is one of the main worries among staff. If the deal passes, workers would have a formal channel on redundancies and generative AI policies, two issues that could shape how Rockstar supports GTA VI over the years ahead.

How to follow the vote and get GTA VI ready: step by step

  1. Check the Rockstar Game Workers Union's Bluesky account and the IWGB for the result after the ballot closes on 26 November.

  2. If you haven't pre-ordered, compare editions and prices in our GTA VI price in India guide.

  3. Clear storage on your PS5 or Xbox Series X|S before 12 November, so the preload can start as soon as it unlocks.

  4. Turn on automatic downloads (PS5: Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode; Xbox: Settings > General > Power options) so the preload runs overnight.

  5. On 19 November, keep your console online so the licence unlocks at launch.

What's not confirmed yet

  • The result. The vote closes on 26 November. How soon results will be announced hasn't been said.

  • Exact ballot times. Only the dates have been published.

  • How many staff are eligible. The IWGB says a yes vote would create the biggest recognised union in the UK games sector, but hasn't given a headcount in the reports we checked.

  • Rockstar's official response. Rockstar hasn't commented on the vote itself.

  • GTA VI's install size. A 210 GB figure is going around, but it's a datamined estimate. Rockstar hasn't confirmed it, so we don't treat it as official.

The bigger picture

A recognised union at Rockstar, during the launch of a game Take-Two expects to help drive about $8 billion in fiscal 2027 revenue (per Game Developer), would be one of the most visible wins for game workers in the UK. We'll update this story when the result is announced.

Frequently asked questions

When is the Rockstar union vote?

The IWGB says Rockstar's UK staff will vote from 12 November to 26 November 2026. The exact opening and closing times haven't been published.

Will the union vote delay GTA VI?

Nothing suggests it will. The ballot is a vote on recognising a union, not strike action, and Rockstar's Newswire still lists GTA VI for 19 November 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.

What would the union deal cover?

According to the IWGB, the recognition agreement would give workers a say on pay and bonuses, overtime, redundancies, flexible working and generative AI policies. The union's own post also mentions pensions and parental leave.

Does the vote include Rockstar India in Bengaluru?

The IWGB and the outlets that reported its announcement describe it as a vote for Rockstar's UK staff. None of them mention Rockstar India, so don't assume it covers staff in Bengaluru.

What has Rockstar said?

Rockstar hasn't commented publicly on the vote. In Bloomberg's recent feature on GTA VI, head of publishing Jennifer Kolbe said: 'We go where the team goes. So if they want a union, they will have a union,' as quoted by PC Gamer.

When does GTA VI preload start in India?

Take-Two says digital pre-orders can preload from 12 November 2026 at local midnight, which for India means the start of 12 November IST. The game launches on 19 November.
