Call of Duty has passed $40 billion in lifetime franchise revenue, Xbox CEO Asha Sharma announced on X days after Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 launched on 23 October 2026. She called MW4 "one of the most celebrated Call of Duty games in its 24-year history" but gave no sales or player numbers for the new game.

The milestone covers the whole series, not MW4 alone. Neither Microsoft nor Activision has broken down how much of the $40 billion came from game sales, in-game purchases or Warzone. This article sets out what is confirmed, what the public player data shows, and what matters if you're buying or playing MW4 in India.

What Asha Sharma said

In a post on X dated 26 October 2026, shared with a graphic of MW4 review quotes, Sharma wrote: "One of the most celebrated Call of Duty games in its 24-year history, and now $40B in lifetime franchise revenue. An incredible milestone. Congrats to the Activision team. And to the players, thank you for being with us."

Gadgets360 (27 Oct, 11:48 IST) and IGN both reported the post. Gadgets360 notes that Sharma did not confirm player or sales numbers for Modern Warfare 4.

What the player numbers show, and what they don't

Activision hasn't published MW4 sales. The only public data point is Steam, and it's only partial. According to SteamDB figures cited by Gadgets360, the unified Call of Duty app on Steam passed 100,000 concurrent players on 16 October, the day campaign early access opened, and 200,000 over the launch weekend.

Those numbers come with caveats. The Call of Duty app is a hub that also runs Warzone, the free-to-play battle royale, so Steam concurrency can't be read as MW4 sales. It also leaves out other PC launchers and every console. Gadgets360 confirms that player counts for PS5, Xbox Series X|S and Switch 2 aren't known.

Why MW4 isn't on Game Pass, and why that matters

MW4 is the first new Call of Duty under Microsoft's changed subscription policy. Gadgets360 reports that Microsoft said this year it would stop bringing new Call of Duty games to Game Pass on day one. Xbox.com now says plainly that MW4 is "not available on Game Pass until Holiday 2027", and that to play you buy the Standard or Vault Edition. The Xbox India Game Pass page also carries a footnote that its "select games" offer excludes Call of Duty titles.

That puts the $40 billion figure in context. Because MW4 is sold as a full-price game on every platform instead of being given to subscribers, its launch adds directly to franchise revenue, alongside BlackCell, battle passes and in-game store sales. Microsoft hasn't said how much of the milestone MW4 itself accounts for.

What it means for players in India

  • Price: Steam lists MW4 at ₹4,999 in India. Console prices are different. Our MW4 guide tracks the PlayStation Store listing, but check your own store before you pay because regional prices and sales change.

  • No subscription shortcut: Game Pass Ultimate or PC Game Pass won't get you MW4 before Holiday 2027, so budget for buying it.

  • Old hardware: there's no Xbox One version, and PC players need TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot enabled. On some motherboards these are switched off in the BIOS/UEFI by default, so check before you buy.

  • Online play on Xbox: Xbox.com says online multiplayer needs a Game Pass Essential subscription, sold separately.

  • Switch 2: MW4 is on Nintendo Switch 2. If you're buying for that console, check the eShop listing for your region.

How to start playing MW4

  1. Choose your platform: PC (Steam or Battle.net), PS5, Xbox Series X|S or Switch 2.

  2. On PC, make sure TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot are on before installing (Windows Security > Device security shows TPM status).

  3. Buy Standard or Vault. Standard can be upgraded to Vault later on the same platform.

  4. Install through the Call of Duty app or hub, which also contains Warzone. Free up storage in advance.

  5. On Xbox, an active Game Pass Essential (or higher) plan is required for online multiplayer.

For full setup steps, see how to install Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4.

Background: a 24-year-old series

Call of Duty started in 2003 and has had a new main game almost every year since. Microsoft took ownership when its acquisition of Activision Blizzard closed in October 2023, which is why the milestone came from Xbox's chief executive rather than Activision alone. The Modern Warfare sub-series, led by Infinity Ward, has long been the franchise's best-known strand, and MW4 brings back Captain Price.

What's unconfirmed

  • MW4 unit sales, revenue and total player numbers. Neither Microsoft nor Activision has published them.

  • How the $40 billion splits between premium sales, in-game spending and Warzone.

  • An exact Game Pass date beyond "Holiday 2027".

  • Season 1 dates and content. Activision says BlackCell and battle pass features arrive with Season 1 but hasn't given an India-time schedule in the sources we used.
