This explainer covers what the game is, the history of the original, what the remaster changes, and which version to buy. To set it up on console, see how to play Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee Remastered on PS5. Store links and PC requirements are on the game page.

What the game is

Destroy All Monsters Melee is a 3D arena fighting game for one to four players. Each player controls a giant monster (kaiju) from Toho's Godzilla films and fights in a fully destructible city. You can punch, grab and throw opponents, fire signature beam attacks, and even pick up buildings and hurl them. Points come from beating rivals but also from levelling the city around you, so a match can be won by destruction as well as by knockouts.

The remaster keeps the original's modes and structure, and Atari says it reproduces the 2002 game's mechanics with "99% mechanical fidelity". What changes is everything around that core:

  • Unreal Engine 5 visuals, with 4K output where the hardware supports it.

  • Online matchmaking for two players, alongside local play for up to four.

  • A currency-based unlock system: you earn currency in matches and spend it to unlock monsters and arenas in any order, instead of grinding a fixed sequence.

  • Native support for modern controller haptics.

  • Single-player campaigns for each kaiju, plus Destruction Mode and Rage Mode.

Remaster launches

The original became a cult favourite among Godzilla fans, partly because it was one of the few games that let four friends wreck a city together as kaiju. It has been unavailable on modern hardware for two decades. The remaster brings back the original publisher and original developer: Atari's chief creative officer Mike Mika said it was "only natural" that Atari would partner with Pipeworks again, and Pipeworks CEO Lindsay Gupton said the team's new release "fulfills our original vision".

The roster

Toho's official Godzilla site confirms a 12-kaiju roster (trailer post, 28 August 2026), and Atari highlights the fan-favourite Showa-era Mechagodzilla. The trailer and third-party coverage name the 12 as Heisei Godzilla, Godzilla 2000, Anguirus, Gigan, Megalon, King Ghidorah, Rodan, Kiryu (Mechagodzilla 3), Mecha-King Ghidorah, Destoroyah, Mechagodzilla (1975 Showa design) and Orga. Neither Toho nor Atari publishes the names as text, so we list them as reported by The Click. Arenas include fully destructible versions of Tokyo and San Francisco, with eight arenas in total, each with day and night variants.

  • Couch play with friends: pick the console you already own. All console versions support up to four players locally.

  • Online: two-player online matchmaking. On PS5 you need PS Plus, on Switch 2 Nintendo Switch Online, and on Xbox a Game Pass tier that includes online multiplayer. Crossplay has not been confirmed.

  • Physical collectors: the Switch 2 cartridge is a full game on the cart, not a download code, which is why it costs $10 more.

  • Original Switch: Atari's announcement named Nintendo Switch as well, but there is no Switch 1 store page and the official site lists only Switch 2, so a Switch 1 version is unconfirmed.

For players in India

  • Release time: 7:30 p.m. IST on Tuesday 3 November 2026 on PS5 and Xbox.

  • Prices: PlayStation Store India and the Xbox Store India list the game, but no INR price was shown on 31 October 2026. We will update this when stores go live. There is no Nintendo eShop in India, and Atari's physical pre-orders ship from its US store.

  • Download size: small by modern standards: about 5.2 GB on Xbox, 3.9 GB on Switch 2 and 8 GB on PC.

PC requirements

From the Steam listing (checked 31 October 2026):

Minimum

Recommended

OS

Windows 10

Windows 11

CPU

Core i7-9700 / Ryzen 5 3600

Core i7-10700K / Ryzen 5 5600X

RAM

16 GB

32 GB

GPU

GeForce GTX 1650 (4 GB)

GeForce GTX 1070 / 1080 (8 GB)

Storage

8 GB

8 GB

These are high requirements for an 8 GB game because Unreal Engine 5 is demanding; the recommended 32 GB of RAM is unusual for a fighting game. If your PC is near the minimum, wait for launch-day performance reports, since the free demo ended on 27 October.

What is still unconfirmed

  • Exact hour on Steam and Switch 2. Only PS5 and Xbox list 14:00 UTC.

  • UK, EU and Indian prices. No store showed a local price on 31 October 2026.

  • Crossplay between platforms.

  • A Switch 1 version. Named in June, but with no store page.

  • PS5 download size. Not shown on the PlayStation Store.

We will update this page and the game page once stores go live on 3 November.

Cheats

The remaster replaces the original's unlock grind with in-game currency, and Atari has not announced cheat codes. NextPlayIntel does not publish a cheat sheet for this game; any "unlock all monsters" code lists online refer to the 2002 GameCube version.

Is it worth $29.99?

If you played the original with friends, this is the version to play now: same fights, modern visuals, online play and a fairer unlock system. If you have never played it, think of it as a party brawler rather than a deep fighting game, best with friends on the same sofa.
