What Sony announced
Sony announced Quick Spectral Super Resolution, or QSSR, on 1 October 2026. The technology brings AI-assisted upscaling to PS5, with Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei named as the first games. Sony said both were receiving patches that day to add a graphics option. This report was checked on 26 October; it is a recap of that announcement, not a claim that a new console launched today.
QSSR and PS5 Pro PSSR are different
Sony describes QSSR as a new performance tier developed through its Project Amethyst collaboration with AMD. It uses a streamlined neural network and an implementation tuned for PS5. PSSR remains Sony’s higher-tier solution on PS5 Pro. The announcement does not promise identical output between the two consoles, nor does it provide a universal frame-rate or resolution target.
Which games have confirmed support?
The announcement names Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei. Sony plans to make the library available broadly to developers, but that does not establish support in every game. It also does not confirm QSSR for GTA VI. A developer’s specific patch notes are the evidence to look for before treating another title as supported.
A practical comparison checklist
For a useful comparison on your own console, write down the game version, graphics mode and display settings first. Compare the same scene and repeat the same camera movement. Look at thin objects, distant detail and moving edges rather than judging only a still image. Keep your viewing distance and TV picture preset unchanged so the comparison answers one question at a time.
Our recommendation is to judge both clarity and responsiveness. If a mode looks sharper in a screenshot but feels less comfortable in motion, the screenshot alone is not a sufficient reason to choose it. This is suggested testing methodology, not a claim that NextPlayIntel has benchmarked these patches.
What this means before buying hardware
Do not base a console purchase on an assumed upgrade for your entire library. Make a shortlist of the games you actually play, check each developer’s supported modes and decide whether the changes matter on your screen. Existing PS5 owners can investigate the announced options before deciding whether a hardware purchase would solve a real problem for them.
