Short answer: GTA Advance is not sold anymore. There's no official download in the US, UK, Europe or India and no re-release on Switch, PC or phones (checked 29 October 2026). The only legal way to play is a genuine Game Boy Advance cartridge in a GBA, GBA SP, Game Boy Micro, Nintendo DS or DS Lite, or on a TV with a GameCube and Game Boy Player.

Step 1: choose the hardware
Hardware | Plays GTA Advance cartridges? | Notes |
|---|---|---|
Game Boy Advance / GBA SP / Game Boy Micro | Yes | Original hardware; SP and Micro have lit screens |
Nintendo DS and DS Lite | Yes (bottom slot) | Single-player GBA mode |
Nintendo DSi, 3DS, 2DS | No | No GBA cartridge slot |
GameCube with Game Boy Player | Yes | Plays on a TV; needs the start-up disc |
Nintendo Switch / Switch 2 | No | Not announced for Nintendo Switch Online (unconfirmed) |
PC, PlayStation, Xbox, mobile | No official version | Never ported |
For handheld play, a backlit GBA SP (the AGS-101 model has the brighter screen) or a DS Lite is the most comfortable. The original 2001 GBA has no screen light, which makes the small top-down view hard to read. To play on a TV, a GameCube with the Game Boy Player attachment and its start-up disc is the official option.
Step 2: buy a genuine cartridge
Look for Grand Theft Auto Advance or simply Grand Theft Auto with the Rockstar and Game Boy Advance logos. Don't confuse it with the Game Boy Color versions of GTA 1 and GTA 2.
Ask for clear photos of the front label and the back of the cartridge. Genuine GBA cartridges have a printed code on the label and Nintendo branding on the back.
Be wary of a label that looks glossy or blurry, a cartridge that feels light, or a price well below other listings. Those are common signs of a reproduction.
If you can, ask the seller to show the game booting and loading a save.
Step 3: set it up and play
Insert the cartridge into the Game Boy Advance slot (the bottom slot on a DS or DS Lite) and switch on.
On a DS, choose the GBA option from the menu if it doesn't start automatically.
Start a new game. Progress is saved at safehouses in Liberty City.
If a used cartridge won't save, it may have a storage problem; test it before your return window closes.

Looking after an old cartridge
GTA Advance is more than twenty years old, so a little care goes a long way.
Dirty contacts: if the game doesn't start or freezes on the title screen, the most common cause is dirty contacts. Switch the console off, gently clean the cartridge's metal contacts with a cotton bud and a little isopropyl alcohol, let it dry fully, and try again.
Storage: keep it in a case, away from heat, damp and direct sunlight. Humidity in many parts of India can corrode contacts, so a sealed box with a silica-gel sachet helps.
Inserting and removing: always switch the console off first. Pulling a cartridge out while the game is running can corrupt the save.
Saves: keep a note of your progress. If a used cartridge loses its save, there's no cloud backup to restore it from.
Playing on a TV with the Game Boy Player
The Game Boy Player is a Nintendo accessory that clips under the GameCube and plays Game Boy Advance cartridges on your television. You need three things: a GameCube, the Game Boy Player unit and its start-up disc. Plug the GameCube into your TV, insert the start-up disc, put the GTA Advance cartridge in the Player's slot and switch on. Because the GameCube outputs a standard-definition signal, the picture will look soft on a modern 4K TV, but the top-down view is much easier to read than on an unlit GBA screen.
What to expect when you start
GTA Advance plays like a GTA III story in top-down form. You'll pick up missions from named contacts marked on the map, earn money, save at safehouses and deal with police wanted levels, and side jobs such as taxi, ambulance and vigilante missions are there for extra cash. The story is told through text scenes with drawn portraits rather than voiced cutscenes, and each car plays a single tune instead of radio stations.
What about emulators and ROMs?
Emulator software is a separate question from the game file. Downloading a GTA Advance ROM from a website is not authorised by Rockstar or Nintendo and isn't a legal way to obtain the game, so we don't link to any. If you already own the cartridge, the law on making your own backup differs from country to country; check the rules where you live before doing it.
India: buying advice
There was no official Indian release that we could find, so copies in India are imports. Buy from sellers with a returns policy and good ratings, compare a few listings, and check photos carefully, since reproductions are common. GBA cartridges are region-free, so a US or European copy works on any GBA-compatible Nintendo handheld. Used GBA SP and DS Lite consoles are also easy to find on Indian second-hand marketplaces; check the hinge, the screen and the charger before buying.
If you can't find a copy
If you want the same era of Liberty City on modern hardware, GTA: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition includes GTA III, set one year after Advance, on PS5, Xbox, Switch and PC. It doesn't include Advance or Mike's story.
