Rockstar has let Edge magazine watch Grand Theft Auto VI being played with no script. In a 16-page cover story for Edge 430, published on 29 October 2026, Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson plays the current build for 90 minutes, and the studio's leads describe police K9 units, a heat system built on what witnesses and cameras saw, a much longer day-night cycle, and working buses and trains.
The feature, written by Simon Parkin after a visit to Rockstar North in Edinburgh, is free to read on GamesRadar+, Edge's sister site, and comes with 12 new screenshots. GTA VI launches on 19 November 2026 for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, three weeks from now.

What Rockstar showed Edge
More interiors: Aaron Garbut, co-studio head and head of development, says the game has "an order of magnitude more interiors" than earlier GTA games. Rockstar did not give a count.
Police dogs and stingers: in the demo, police lay a stinger strip that blows the tyre of Jason's stolen motorcycle, then a K9 unit's dog catches him on foot.
A heat system built on evidence: icons at the top of the screen show what the police know, including your description, whether you had a partner, your clothes, CCTV footage and your weapon. Splitting up, changing clothes or dropping the gun removes matching details.
Carrying a weapon matters: pedestrians react to a shotgun held in your hands differently from one slung on your back, and some will challenge you.
Longer days and nights: Nelson says GTA V's timings made "everything felt too fast" at GTA VI's fidelity, so the cycle was extended substantially.
Narrower roads: GTA V's wide roads and highways were narrowed to what Nelson calls "a more believable size".
Buses and trains: public transport runs on working systems. Phil Hooker, a third head of development, says he rides the buses to check they turn up.
Weather: clouds move on their own, shaped by wind, humidity, fog, time of day and season. Storms can buffet aircraft and change how boats handle.
Systems Rockstar described again
Edge also covers systems that had come up in earlier preview coverage, with new detail on how they play.
System | What Edge reports |
|---|---|
Criminal Profile | Tracks Jason and Lucia from 'Professional' to 'Irredeemable'; Rockstar says it influences how the story unfolds |
Relationship | Closeness on a four-point scale, raised by time together such as beach walks, cycling, the gym and drives |
Vehicles | Every vehicle has a fuel gauge and an engine health readout; newer cars may carry trackers |
Scooter Bros app | Pay a fee and a courier delivers one of your cars; your weapons are stored in the boot |
WAINK app | Lists vehicles fences want, with their security and tracking features |
Map | About twice the size of GTA V's; Rockstar says the landmass is nearly as large as GTA IV, GTA V and RDR2's playable maps combined |
Pedestrians | About 600,000 animations, with personality traits that shape how each person reacts |

How a mission is paced
Edge says story missions are not always available back to back. Jason and Lucia sometimes need to raise money before the next job, for example by robbing a gas station or jewellery store or stealing a car for a fence. Story missions are still there for players who want to focus on them.
Rockstar also described how the game is made: about 900 people work at Rockstar North, teams in Toronto and San Diego lead on world population and ambient events, development runs in roughly six-to-eight-week milestones, and Nelson says Rockstar president Sam Houser stays involved in every major creative decision.
What is still unconfirmed
Whether Jason and Lucia can marry. Edge says Nelson would neither confirm nor deny it.
An exact interior count. Garbut gave a multiplier, not a number.
